However, I agree with your sentiment. I want Carter to pass knowing we are safe from Tiny's destruction and that America isn't being subverted and destroyed by Russia. I want him to die in peace with himself and the country, he deserves that for all the massive good he's done here and throughout the world. He's the best person to ever be president, the most giving and caring. Obama is a very good man, and was a better president, but no one is a better ex-president, ever.

3. About President Carter...He saved more lives with the seat belt order than all Bush Jr. killed.

.....Seatbelt requirement became mandatory in 84. Many cars were being equipped with belts beforehand. After that other safety requirements were required. Air bags , side impact air bags. crumple zones, extra lights on cars (like that light in the rear window that goes on when you brake your car) etc. Gradually with the safety features that cars have been required to have..(starting with Carter's orders)...cars have become much safer, even though there are millions of more cars on the road..

Carter did a brilliant thing. He did not order them right away. He gave the auto industry 7 years to comply and get it all together and put seatbelts in cars. So the order was given in 77 a few months after he became President. It went into effect 7 years later. Plenty of time for the auto manufacturers to comply. Some complied earlier but all met the deadline.

If you know someone whose life was saved from the seatbelts, airbags, and other safety requirements; tell them it was Carter who ordered this. Oh, and Carter does NOT brag about this. Saving lives is his legacy.



You will see a significant drop in deaths on the highway starting around 82 or 83.

5. What seat belt order?

Cars were required to have seat belts in 1968. Long before Carter. The laws requiring seat belt use are State laws not federal laws. NY passed the first state law in 1984, four years after Carter. New Hampshire still has no law requiring seat belt use.

8. I really don't think that is correct

While I wasn't an adult in the 1970's I owned three cars from that era a 69 chevy impala, a 73 grand marquis and a 79 grand marquis and all of them had seat belts with the 73 and 79 having buzzers that wouldn't stop until you buckled up. He might have made back seat seat belts mandatory but not front seat ones.

my 1959 VW bug. All my others, starting with the '69 bug, had seatbelts.

I think that significant drop related to seat belts had a lot more to do with enforcing the seat belt laws, and kids being in child seats. Even today there are people who refuse to wear seat belts. Sometimes they learn the hard way, by being ejected from a car in an accident. Mostly they never have to use a seat belt after that.
