I watched the movie Barry on Netflix.
I love the guy. The Obama you saw as president was very much the Obama you saw as a young man. He was thoughtful and trying to navigate living in different worlds.
I'm not good at movie reviews but I'll give it the proverbial college try. There are two scenes that stood out. He was at the wedding party of his college girlfriend who happened to be white. She was upper class and the wedding was what you would expect. The mother of his girlfriend introduces them to this interracial couple and tells Barack they were writers and activists in the sixties. The African American gentleman asks Barack if his parents were activists and he says not exactly but that that he was introduced to them because he is the son of an interracial couple. The gentleman asks Barack where he's from and he says he lived in Jakarta. Honolulu, California, and is now living in New York. The gentleman says that's quite a gumbo, young brother. That makes you American.
One of his classmates was a Brett Kavanaugh frat boy type. He wasn't racist but he was deliberately unaware. Barack calls him an asshole but tells him he's all right. I inferred from that Barack saw his unawareness stemming from ignorance and not actual malice.
Great movie.
