But a reasonable, albeit cynical, president would manufacture a war with a Grenada. Not a country like Iran. That would be a disaster of epic proportions on so many levels.

They are backed into a corner? And Putin and RUMP i'm sure are figuring out ways to stop the WHOLE situation? Does the new house hold the power of the purse to stop funding? Would the pentagon AGREE to this bullshit? SOO many questions to be answered for this country's future!

I expected our country to be in a couple of new wars by now. As to whether we end up in a war with Iran, Trump doesn't care if he causes a disaster of epic proportions, he only cares about money and adulation directed toward him. And, a war with Iran would get him both.

Since the 2000 Bush and administration ignored Clinton, we were attacked by basically Saudi Arabia citizens but alas blamed Iraq.

Prize for Iran is the oil (think Iraq). Prize for Israel would be finally destroying their enemy.

Iranians are clients of Putin and the Russian kleptocracy. I bet Putin would withdraw his support of the Iranians if the Magnitsky sanctions were dropped...the Exxon arctic deal with Rosneft stands to bring the Russians trillions of dollars, with a 'T', but Magnitsky prevents it. Makes you wonder what that low-five was really all about.

5. If that's true, we would suffer a momentous defeat.

There is no incentive to go to war against Iran. Tens of thousands of Americans would die, and many multiples more of Iranians. For what end?

Even if we “won,” we would lose. Extremists would overrun any feckless puppet government we installed, and would wait us out until we left.

I’m not speaking of purely a military defeat. We “beat” Iraq very quickly, and then wasted trillions of dollars and lives trying to put the genie back into the bottle. There will be no flowers thrown at our feet.

9. Trying to shoe-horn a war through Congress in under a month would be a laughable act of stupidity.

Trump could declare a police action, and make things even worse. He’s arrogant enough to do it. If he wants to be historically disgraced and get good Americans killed, sure, why not? I’ll never put anything past such an arrogant man.

so that won't give him any pause to starting it. He's dangerous. If he can't shoehorn through Congress and he wants it he will start it anyway.

Dems won't even have to power to do this...the Senate would block any legislative action.

8. Withholding funding is both a) too slow/after the fact and b) a PR/political disaster

because of the absolutely inevitable hue and cry to "support the troops"

What should happen if Trump starts a war with Iran is a revocation of the AUMF, a resolution that Trump has violated the War Powers Resolution, and impeachment.

President Donald Trump would get broad authority to use force against terrorist groups, with no expiration date, under a new bipartisan proposal unveiled in the U.S. Senate on Monday.
