Bernie Sanders is right: TV networks need to do a much better job of covering climate change

Bernie Sanders thinks there's a problem with TV news coverage of climate change. “This is an issue of huge consequence and you would think that ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox would be talking about this every day, having the debate, ‘What do we do? Where do we go?’” he recently told HuffPost. “Clearly you aren’t seeing that debate.”

Bernie Sanders is right.

The Vermont senator and former presidential candidate is expected to highlight the media's shortcomings during a national town hall on climate change solutions that will be live-streamed on December 3 at 7 p.m. ET. As HuffPost's Alexander Kaufman explained in an article about the town hall, Sanders may "challenge TV networks to cover a rapidly worsening crisis they’ve long ignored."

Ignore it they have. Media Matters closely tracks TV coverage of climate change and consistently finds it lacking, both in quantity and in quality. Check out some of our findings from this year:

No Democrat or progressive Independent should ever get in front of a camera without mentioning climate change and hold the media accountable for their criminal negligence on this issue.

...im in the Pacific Northwest and much of our way of life will impacted by Climate Change.. There goes your red delicious apples and your honey crisps (and all the other apples) if we go up by a few degrees.. Salmon fishing will be impacted...crabbing.....forests. Maybe VT doesnt have as much to lose but we are always getting messaging about it. Our local stations ( I get Seattle stations) are always talking about the impact.

and priority that this crisis warrants. I'm glad that your regional news is giving it significant coverage. It gets covered in NY also, but it is rarely leading news, usually semi-buried with local scandals and human interest stories. The national news should be following the lead of your Seattle stations.

On more than just climate change. They also need to start getting the fact straight about the real difference between us and the GOP there is no such thing as both side do it, One only has to look at what Mike Lee said to understand the difference and his BS should be all over the MSM

the major emitters of greenhouse gases. Right up to the last dollar is on the table to pay for ads, the networks will sell us out. We need better educated voters who will act in their own interests.
