[IMG][/IMG]
This school is in my county, Sullivan County in TN. The school is Sullivan South. They're called the rebels. I look at this and to me it looks like a klan rally.
Another local high school told them to not bring these flags to their games. From what I've read, they have complied.
Fortunately, my son will never set foot in this school. We're in a different district.
on edit: A friend of mine took this. She said this was a gathering in one corner of the parking lot at a home game. She took the pic because she had never seen so many like this before. School officials won't say anything when they are at the home school for games. Her and I are speculating that this may be because this is an election year. She's fairly conservative, but still a huge Obama supporter because of his stances on women's rights. That's what keeps her from being a repub.

Some of these people probably threw a fit when the American Olympic runner and silver medalist Leo Manzano carried two flags.

(11,366 posts)A Sullivan County woman says Sullivan East High School officials would not allow her to fly a Confederate flag from her truck on school property. They asked her to take it down on Friday.
But school officials say its not necessarily about the flag. Principal Angie Buckles says its against school policy to fly any flag on a pole out the back of a vehicle. She says its not just the rebel flag, its anything flying from a pole.
Principal Buckles says it's a safety issue. She says the pole can be used as a weapon or it could fall out and hurt and student. 11 Connects asked Buckles to see where the rule is in a handbook. She said it is not a written rule.

(11,366 posts)Just look at this board: Southerners are treated like we're all idiots and that every single one of us are bumpkins who always vote Republican. In fact, it gets so bad, I have started alerting on any thread that devolves into a Southern bashing exercise.
If progressives - and I include myself in that group - would stop talking at Southerners and start talking with them, the change would happen. It's perfectly natural for people to do just the opposite of what someone who is constantly bashing you tells you to do.
I'm not defending this flag, mind you. I'm pointing out that deriding an entire region for the actions of a few helps neither the region nor the accuser.

(11,366 posts)They probably haven't even considered what that flag represents.
I know the school has tried to curb its use - as did the Maryville, TN "Rebels" - but some of the parents are idiots and refuse to let it go.

(11,304 posts)when I moved here that sometimes I think they still haven't gotten over the civil war. I don't think they are even aware of it. I have been lucky in my life to live all over the U. S. and overseas. So I see a bigger picture. I just don't think they are aware of it. Not all southerns think the same way. The thing is if you know that people feel hurt by this flag any normal person would put it away. You want your community be whole.

(11,366 posts)I live in Knoxville and, I swear, no one EVER talks about the Civil War. Not my friends or neighbors or co-workers. I see it discussed more on this board than in anyplace I go to in real life.

Edited to take out the repetition of the bigot word.

(11,366 posts)Granted, the photograph in the OP certainly shows a certain amount of pure bigotry, but so does painting a whole state in a bad light.

(30,947 posts)Flags, knives, T-shirts, sunglasses and pipes were all sold there. I had no say what merchandise was sold because I was just an employee. But the Confederate flag was a big seller. A lot of people would ask if we sold Confederate bumper stickers.

(11,366 posts)I'm wondering why she's allowing it since she said earlier she wouldn't.
Since you live up there, have you seen anything more in the news about that?
I live in Knoxville, btw. I know many of the local schools here wouldn't let Maryville bring those flags on their campuses, either.

(31,011 posts)Sullivan East and Sullivan South are two different schools. My daughters used to go to Sullivan North. It's confusing.
It could be that Sullivan South has more conservative elements that they have to be cautious of.

(11,366 posts)I didn't realize there were so many Sullivan (region) high schools! That is confusing!

(12,132 posts)I've never had the inclination to exit and see what it is actually flying over and I can't see the place clearly from the freeway. I've been told it might be a truck stop.
I have to pass it periodically on my way south for work...heck, imma go google map it and see if that says what it is.
It's pretty despicable to me no matter why it's there.
Wow, it's there but it seems to be separate from the surrounding businesses
There appears to be a monument or marker of some kind in front of it. No idea what this thing is supposed to commemorate but it sucks.
I damn sure wouldn't own a business near there.
More info, if you play around with the google 3D map you can see a sign out front that says something about General Jubal Early. I guess he camped there once before continuing to fail at humanity.

Should make the repukes feel at home during their upcoming circle-jerk.
Btw, this is NOT photoshopped. That is the actual view drivers see as they pass under that MLK Blvd sign.

(1,289 posts)Mostly I just ignore it, these assholes are generally doing it to get a rise out of somebody so they can beat their chest and scream "I'll fly it if I want to!!!". I think sometimes the best way to get to them is just to ignore them and not give them what they are looking for, just give them the "big yawn".
I was coming out of a Waffle House a few weeks ago and a kid pulled in with a big rebel flag flying on the back of his truck. I kinda made a face as I passed and he said "what, you have a problem with the rebel flag?" I said "no, it's just that you're flying it upside down"
That idiot was still standing there looking at it scratching his head when I was pulling out of the parking lot.
Good one. Welcome to DU.
