Brenda Snipes says she wont resign as Broward County election supervisor after all
The move pits Snipes against Florida Gov. Rick Scott, who had already chosen her replacement.
By Jane Coastonjane.coaston@vox.com Updated Dec 3, 2018, 2:04pm EST
Brenda Snipes the controversial Broward County, Florida, elections supervisor who oversaw recent recounts for governor and Senate resigned from her position on November 19, saying that she was ready to pass the torch and would leave her job on January 4, 2019.
But on December 1, Snipes rescinded her resignation after Republican Gov. Rick Scott suspended her without pay and appointed a replacement. In a statement, Snipess attorney said: We believe these actions are malicious, we believe that the allegations that are set forth in the governors executive order are done for the purposes of embarrassing Dr. Snipes embarrassing her and tarnishing her record and we will be fighting this.
Its not clear what this will mean for Snipes, or for Broward County, but it appears that legal actions may be looming.

(8,223 posts)I deeply doubt the $130K. That would require 30 years of service with a highest 5 of $271K. The Governor only makes $165K, so unless Ms. Snipes was the President of a major state university or a Florida / FSU football coach, she isn't getting anything like that.

(11,790 posts)Almost $11,000 a month. Thats what Brenda Snipes will be receiving in pension benefits when she resigns in January as the Broward County Supervisor of Elections.
The state pensions include $58,560 a year shes already receiving from her earlier career as an educator, and shell be adding almost $71,000 a year for her time in elected office.

(8,223 posts)but 50 years of creditable service in two different jobs was possible under the rules in effect prior to 2011, when she took the second job as supervisor of elections. Under current FRS rules I could not earn a second pension, no matter what I did. Under the current rules you can only use up to 30 years of service for one pension (you can work more but only 30 years count). This is true for me only because I was hired before 2011. Once I retire, after a year off, I could take another state job, but I can get no credit for a second pension under it.
Of course currently for new hires the option of a defined benefit pension is no longer available. You can only get an "investment plan" - like a 401K but under a different rule number.
This is a rightwing hobby horse talking point the Orlando Sentinel loves to go off on and has done so on occasion since the Reagan Revolution. There were a very few individuals under the old rules of the FRS system who managed to reap a bonanza, legally under the rules and contracts in place when they were hired. The vast bulk of folks (90% +) got a minor addition to their Social Security check for 30 years of service. The Sentinel's incessant campaign on this issue got the pension system "reformed" in a way that for the most part makes retired teachers, administrative assistants, and clerks at the Driver's license office significantly poorer when they finally retire.

(25,911 posts)Except, she actually resigned already, effective January 1.
And, she deserves her pension. WE have deferred compensation pensions here, and if we earn them all those years, we deserve them.

(51,432 posts)This is the second post about the politics in that area right now. The other post was regarding a Sheriff Dept SWAT guy wearing a Q Anon patch to meet Pence. It doesn't seem like a good advertisement for your area when this stuff makes national news.

(51,432 posts)Is there something in the water there? This sort of attention can't be good advertising for their area. They'd better get their act together.

.by allowing that poorly designed ballot to be used.
She should just retire and take her $130K per year pension
