Dr. Lee Lloyd Pickett.
His and his families lives crossed paths with George Bush on a couple of occasions.
Dad was medical director with Gulf Oil in Houston, Tx. His office was in downtown Houston, but he often had to leave the office to visit a refinery or some other Gulf facility during the day, and parking was a problem. When a new downtown lot was built by the city he sought a reserved spot in the new underground lot. He was told that there would be no reserved spaces.
Not long after the lot opened, he was headed for the elevator when he noticed 2 reserved spots,
Reserved for
United States Congressman,
George H.W. Bush
He called the parking administrator and sent a "strongly worded letter" to Mayor Welch. The reserved spot wasremoved forthwith.
In 1968he supported Sen. Ralph Yarborough for reelection. Lloyd Bentson got the nomination and dad gave more money to Ralph to retire his campaign debt. My older brother spent a weekend visiting Yarborough at his ranch. Dad got behind Bentsen.
Then a memo came from /gulf HQ in Pittsburgh directing Gulf directors to donate money to the candidate that was in favor of oil depletion allowances: (R) George HW Bush. Dadtook note of the memo and donated money ... to Lloyd Bentsen.
He gota visit from the head Medical guy from Pittsburgh and soon after got word that he was being transferred. In 1970we moved to New Orleans. During the move - a hectic affair - my mom slipped up and did not get her annual cancer screen. I started to college that fall and the next year my mom was diagnosed with a serious caseof cancer. She died July 13, 1973.
Though GeorgeBush was not personally responsible for any of Gulf Oil'sshennanigans,or the move, et al. my mom was dead.
In 1988 I started working in Wash DC and my wife was a clerk with the House Energy and Commerce Committee. George Bush was running for president and had his campaign HQ in the building I worked in around the cornerfrom the White House. Occassionally they would sweep the building with bomb sniffing dogs when George visited.
The lovely and talentd Melodie was in the Congressional Chorus and they sang on the steps of the Capitol at Bushea innauguration.
This weekend was relly full of memories of the lives of people who had an effect on my life.
