Luxembourg is set to become the first country in the world to abolish all fares on public transport.
A new coalition government is taking office in the Grand Duchy with the promise of abolishing tickets on trains, trams and buses next summer.
At present fares are capped at a low level: 2 for up to two hours of travel, which in the small nation covers almost any journey.
Luxembourgs area is 999 square miles, almost the same as Oxfordshire.

(6,109 posts)The Transit buses are free in Chapel Hill and Carrboro, NC. Nothing quite as extensive as Luxembourg, but until the last few years we had been the largest fare-free system in world.

(25,816 posts)I know any number of cities offer free or reduced public transit fares to seniors, and that's nice. My city, Santa Fe, only charges 50 cents per ride for those over 60, instead of a dollar. High school students with ID travel for free, I think.
A friend of mine lives near Pittsburgh and seniors there ride for free.
