(3,788 posts)Gerald Ford also had two funeral services -one in DC and one in Grand Rapids. He also had a public visitation at his library.

(70,674 posts)up with Shrub. *********HEY, I've been very good at not sniping much for the past week, can't hold it anymore!1
Oh, look, the boys get to speechify but the girls can only read textual stuff. Plus the Houston crowd is considerably less diverse.
AWwww, how cute, the two granddaughters ended their separate readings by reading together and sharing a giggle!1 And Jeb Crow Shrub has moved up the family pecking order from down the row yesterday to next to Shrub today!1

Baker's was very good. I liked what Baker said about the Berlin Wall. Bush didn't take credit for it.
(The media gave it to Reagan. )
Sure Bush did bad stuff, but Baker was able to spin the bad stuff eloquently.
ETA: Not a fan of Jame's Baker, but he's got speaking skills.

(7,505 posts)Next week they will show flowers being laid, cemetary workers tending the grave, etc. Sheesh enough already!!
Really, its sad and kind of sick. We aren't a monarchy are we? Maybe we are more than I thought.

(19,831 posts)1) The Carter family will opt for less ostentatious and protracted media coverage.
2) The media will spend more time than they did with GHWB discussing the shortcomings of the Carter presidency.

(3,788 posts)Due to the fact he would have 3 laying in state-One in DC,one in Atlanta, and one in Plains.

(15,536 posts)This has now become a spectacle.
The Carters probably already have arrangements for an understated display.

(25,224 posts)Also Carter accomplished more than he was given credit for during his presidency. Dept of Education. Special Education. Renewable energy.

(488 posts)The TV is not tuning into any network showing that crap.
I have remained silent about him, and only have two things to say about GHWB.
1) Thanks for the ADA. It was an important piece of legislation that made my life a lot easier.
2) He's dead. Good.

(6,042 posts)...and so we endure days of of the self-praise of the 1%.
This Bush is the guy who shut down the Special Prosecutor Walsh's investigation into Bush's own role in Iran Costa (the Reagan scandal of colluding with a sanctioned Iran to to move weapons to South American right wing killers.
Bush attained the presidency and pardoned all the bad actors in the Reagan-Bush administration, including Secy of Defense Caspar Weinberger who was about to stand trial, and possibly implicate Bush.
The smug self-praise of the Patriarchy is here on display. Best for the rest of us if it is the Swan Song of same.
We can't afford the old patriarchy any more-we need to spend the rest of this century cleaning up the mess and saving democracy for our heirs --the children of us 99%
I haven't even mention how GHW went to work for Barrick Gold Mining after he left office.
One thing is true however. He was highly experience, generally but not always polite and civil in the social arena, and was such a smooth operator could get away with things other presidents could not.

(26,355 posts)I get it, there's some decorum to be maintained.
But as so many of us point out here, GHWB is no saint. There's a lot of destructive crap that happened during his presidency.
