Shutdown looms as Nancy Pelosi rejects Trump's demand for border wall

By JOHN PARKINSON Dec 6, 2018, 1:22 PM ET

As Democrats wait to take over the majority next year, House Speaker-designate Nancy Pelosi says that lawmakers should punt a debate over the president's demand for a border wall to next fall in order to avert a partial government shutdown later this month.

Rejecting President Donald Trump's $5 billion demand for a border security, Pelosi told reporters she would refuse an offer to permanently resolve the standoff over the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program in exchange for any money for a border wall.

“They’re two different subjects,” Pelosi, D-Calif., said, expressing a desire to decouple the debate over DREAMers from a fight over the border wall.

Throughout negotiations, Trump has repeated his demands for $5 billion toward building a wall at the southern border, threatening to shut down the government if Congress sends him a continuing resolution that does not include funding for border security.

Why didn't the Republicans do anything when they had absolute, untrammeled power for the last two years?

It's like no matter what the story or what the circumstances are, the media always tell their narratives from the Republican perspective.

The idea of being blackmailed by Trump and his stupid, outrageously expensive wall for a resolution on DACA is as low as you get. Pelosi is correct: the issues are two separate subjects and should remain as such. The one issue involves the lives and futures of the DREAMERS; the other Donald Trump's massive hubris.

If the Trumpster wants to close down the Government, let him take the responsibility for the havoc that will entail and the spike in his disapproval numbers.

Pelosi is calling his bluff. Good for her.

If it was ever built (and it won't be) it would be about as effective, too.
