however, Jimmy tends to be more outwardly liberal. I think Hillary is like-minded, mostly, but she and Bill think they have to play it more moderate, and make concessions, to govern. Jimmy & Hillary seemed genuinely friendly at the funeral... I think the better question may be: Why does Chris Matthews play up a feud?
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)president, moderate southern version, but socially more liberal and supporter of civil rights. None of his colleagues would support him for president because he was an intolerant, know-it-all person whom very few were able to like or get along well with. Of course the regular party donors wouldn't consider him, so he ran as a grassroots reformer funded by small donations. Sanders later modeled a lot of his strategy on this, which is really a classic model for pols rejected by those who know them, but still -- Carter applied it to a presidential campaign and won.
Both houses of congress were also Democrat, for a Democratic trifecta, but Carter spent most of his single term opposing congress (that small-government conservative thing, plus he didn't suffer fools and most of his former colleagues in congress were fools). Someone who knew him then described him as the kind of person who has to burn his own thumb before he'll believe fire is hot (not verbatim, but the general idea). A tragically wasted opportunity and end to the New Deal era.
I think even most admirers believe Carter's finest legacy will be as our greatest ex-president. That's when his best qualities were able to develop. All Democrats since have taken ideas from his activist years. Not that it wouldn't have happened anyway with so much life to live, but he was the first with his kind of post-presidency. That's what I like to keep in mind when I think of him.

interesting view of Jimmy Carter - and it makes sense. Republicans and their conservative media portray Democrats as all like-minded ultra-liberal socialists. Carter might have been better to have as President a little later... I was going to meet him and buy his book at Vroman's in Pasadena recently - but the line was so long...
Hortensis
(58,785 posts)shopping with a friend, who was blown away by the crowd the year he took him in Vroman's on a Friday night to get a book I wanted. He'd had no idea that people might go browse a book store for enjoyment on an evening out.
I never joined a signing line in SoCal and went to few talks, but now that we have nothing like that where we live I miss the opportunities, if only to decide not to... I'd like to meet President Carter. Very nice that he's still traveling and doing book signings.

(43,174 posts)Apparently because they arent BFFs breaking into spontaneous song and dance routines people think they are bitter enemies.
Jimmy and Bill have had certain occasional disagreements here and there over the years which isnt anything uncommon even for members of the same party. Its called politics.
Hillary and Jimmy were seen having a nice conversation yesterday until the asshole showed up, at which point everybody in the front row shut up.
All of this is only because Chris Matthews is a gossipy busybody.
Really.

(11,730 posts)Some pundits cannot tell the difference between journalism and being a gossip columnist. Matthews has always been like that. Just because he served under Tip O'Neill he thinks that he is the consummate insider with all the political insight.
He is a goofball.
