I don't think GHW Bush matters.

We're very unlikely to get 1/3 of the Republican Senate to vote to impeach Trump.

You would need a blatant criminal case - way beyond what Nixon did and a secure Republican VP waiting to take over to get 1/3 of the Republican Senate to vote to impeach Trump.

If he reports half of what I believe Trump did, then there's a chance for conviction, even by Rs.

What Mueller will report, I haven't a clue. How long it would take to investigate and impeach I also don't know. Meanwhile, there's a pantload of stuff that needs doing. Any impeachment would have to happen in 2019. 2020 is too late, and political issues would get in the way.

I'm thinking it's not going to happen. Other things might, though.

Short of shooting someone on 5th avenue, I think there is no way in hell that 20 Senators from this generation of Republicans will vote to convict Trump, and even then it's doubtful. They've proven themselves over and over again. Trump may get impeached, but he won't get convicted.

And a solid 5-4 SCOTUS decision the cement the pardons in place.

And if he pardoned himself for raping a 13 year old, don't you think there would be a public backlash if the Senate failed to convict him?

They'll ignore the backlash because people said mean things about George Bush...but they won't if people are nice?

Unless you are talking about someone VERY close to him like a family member. And none of the Senate GOPers meet that criteria.

Their decisions on this matter will be made on the same standard they always use -- personal political (and economic) self-interest. What we need to do in order to remove Trump via impeachment is make failing to remove him cost enough, politically, that they reluctantly admit it must be done. How we make it so costly, and make the threat of the cost so imminent and clear, I don't know yet. Depends on what Mueller and House Dems can drag out into the light. But whatever gets made public, GOPers need to have the sh*t hammered out of them with it until they are willing to vote to remove Trump just to get the hammering to stop.

it is unlikely 1/3 of republicans would vote to impeach and convict with Nancy Pelosi as the Speaker of the House.

We can always hope that Trump resigns.

Trump is not going anywhere and he will not lose Republican support.

The world is a much nicer and more simple place when day to day nonsense is ignored in favor of wide scope logic.

Nearly every day I see and experience each of the three splits in this country:

* Tune into CNN or especially MSNBC, along with forums like this, and the theme is that Mueller is marching toward the truth and Trump is in peril

* Mention something about the Mueller investigation to some stranger around town..."Yeah, I heard something about that. I wish he would hurry up and finish."

* Have a Republican relative or friend...they are stone faced and don't believe any of it. There really is no emotion attached. They don't believe it is worth paying attention to, since nothing would change their mind about Donald Trump
