Moving my Snowmageddon/ Icemageddon gear down from the Blue Ridge Escarpment to Greenville this afternoon, where we will ride this one out.
The mountains will probably get a big snow event. Greenville, maybe an ice storm. That is what I fear (think December 2005).
Generator, gasoline, drop-cords, de-ice crystals (in the garbage can), LED work lights, and orange cones. Snow shovel, ice-cleats, hand-warmers. Flashlights, extra candles and batteries, and warm clothes.
You peeps in Greenville, and Upstate South Carolina, can go ahead and thank me now. By hauling all this stuff down from Caesar's Head today, we are virtually assured of nothing but cold rain all weekend. You are welcome.
Besides, Jim Cantore is in Asheville.

(41,959 posts)We're across the country but the rest of the family has pretty much acceded to his desire to just be home and if it does him in, well, he's doing it his way. I hate to say it but I pretty much understand. He's as healthy and sharp as you can expect for a man that old who lost his wife last year, but he's a stubborn old Appalachian man who I think deserves respect even if it ends badly. The real worry of course is him getting into a situation that puts others in danger trying to rescue him.

(33,322 posts)Get a 20 lb (actually 17) propane tank, one of those little burners that screw onto the top of disposable tanks, and a hose to connect the two. That's heat, hot food, and hot coffee for a few days.
Another thing I keep on hand is a DC-AC inverter. It's nice to be able to recharge little batteries (phone, flashlight, tiny tv) and have an LED light or two. Two car batteries wired in parallel and a 1500W inverter will run a simple drip coffee maker without damaging anything.
