Neo-Nazis, gangs and criminals in the US military

--snip--

Domestic wars
Leaders of the white supremacist movement view enlistment as a means of preparation for a domestic race war. Aside from general combat training, job perks include access to a laboratory of Iraqis and others susceptible to dehumanising brutalisation as well as opportunities to mail AK-47s and related items to the US.
As Kennard demonstrates, the race war is not the only domestic conflict to which decaying military recruitment standards are contributing. According to a 2007 FBI report, "members of nearly every major street gang have been identified on both domestic and international military installations". The report's authors warn: "Both current and former gang-affiliated soldiers transfer their acquired military training and knowledge back to the community and employ them against law enforcement officers, who are typically not trained to engage gangster with military expertise."

US veterans face increased suicide risk
Kennard meanwhile cites statistics obtained by the Michael D Palm Centre via the Freedom of Information Act, revealing the proliferation in military ranks of felons and similarly qualified individuals. The Palm Centre, an official research unit of University of California at Santa Barbara, summarised its findings as follows:

"The data indicate that from 2003 through 2006, the military allowed 4,230 convicted felons to enlist under the 'moral waivers' programme...  In addition, 43,977 individuals convicted of serious misdemeanors such as assault were permitted to enlist under the moral waivers programme during that period, as were 58,561 illegal drug abusers. In the Army, allowable offenses include making terrorist threats, murder, and kidnapping."

would have to scrape the barrel looking for recruits. Those who would have formerly been denied being inducted into the service for health reasons, illiteracy reasons or political reasons would become attractive to the recruiter who needs to fill the ranks. It seems the prediction was accurate. I'm not advocating for the draft. I'm just pointing out the trade off.

The article you posted, from al Jazeera no less, maligns our youmg men in the service instead of acknowledging that they are
American patriots. and I see it further singles out the kids of color as a problem for law enforcement. I don't know of many (any) WASP street gangs. Al Jazeera has its ax to grind but what's yours? Is the fantasy of racial conflict so alluring that you forget that we are one nation indivisible? The theme in your post. is, an old one: "don't trust THOSE people , they must be up to something " bah! decent people reject such foolishness. if a kid was once a gang member but turned bis life around and served our beloved United States , He should be congratulated, not feared.
As for the idea that white soldiers are all some sort of kkk. types... do I really need to debunk such an asinine thought?
Didn't think so

how about The Atlantic? Both have run very similar stories on this well known problem. It is not hysterically large, but it is there.

Hell, we have had a few fights between gangs in the service. You should try to get yourself educated, sport.

I've been watching this phenomenon for some time and sadly, some of the research I've done over the years suggests that some of the white supremacists who are and have been joining the Army, are doing so, not in an attempt to turn their lives around, but rather, in some cases, to acquire what German neo-Nazi lawyer Jurgen Reiger called, "Specialized Knowledge and Abilities", instead.

You remember Wade Page? He was far from the first to have these possible motives, and he won't be the last, either.

They have not done anything heroic, could care less about their country, and are just all-around bad people. I know that this is true because the military is made up of the general populace, and these are all also true of some in the general populace.

There are KKK members in the military, members of gangs, rapists, pedophiles, torturers, and murderers. Sorry, but it's true, and completely unavoidable. Being a good person isn't a requirement for joining the military.

and the army does conduct yearly sensitivity training to alert people to what those symbols are so they can recognize them. They also encourage people who have been harassed because of their race or religion to file EO complaints.

I could have gotten half the people I served with in Afghanistan hit with EO complaints if I chose to. I was (still am) the only jewish soldier in my company and I got subjected to taunts and statements like "your people killed Christ" and "dirty jew" and so on and so forth.

But I was a new cherry private and figured it was part of what being in the army (and the infantry especially) was all about. The only time it became an issue was when people in my platoon started telling the Afghan army soldiers that I was jewish. For obvious reasons that concerned me. After my PL found out about it he told the CO (who was married to a jewish woman) and order came down not to mention my religion in front of the ANA.

So I will try to be as general as possible. No one denies there are a few bad apples in any organization. including the military. That said how do you equate some poor kid from the street with some neo Nazi sociopath ? and again while there may be a fee such cretins in the service they are few and far between. Even one such moron is one too many, but c'mon. you all know that our boys are the best in the world. blame politicians who send them into needless wars. blame leaders who tell them torture is ok. (It isn't by the way) but to malign our boys as criminals and psychopathic skinheads is just wrong. as for what's wrong with al Jazeera... they would he inclined to see things in a more hostile light since we have been at war with Iraq and Afghanistan for a decade. Just like we are inclined to be hostile to anyone fighting Americans. human nature being what it is.

I am no knee jerk Jingoistic right winger. I am a proud liberal. as. I was basically pointing out that the "gangster as soldier" argument has been used by bigots in the past to stoke fear. As for sounding like a flag waver ... no apologies. stars and stripes forever. liberalism is Americanism
