Republicans look out at America and see a place they don't like -- too many queers, too many folks speaking Spanish, and that crazy rock and roll. They are fearful.
They are sure the sky is falling. They want to hunker down -- cut off the poor and the elderly, lock down the borders, pile up a bigger arsenal of weapons and wait for Jesus to come back, or for the world to "make sense again," or both.
And in their state of fear, Republicans reach out for protection from their "betters."
"If we can just keep the super-rich happy," they think, "those people will keep us safe and take care of us -- just like the lords of old who protected the loyal serfs who knew their place. We must show the rich that we are worthy so that we can win their favor."
Republicans say they "want their country back." And what they mean is that they want to be delivered from their small-minded terror about the world around them. But really, they actually cling to the fear by choice because it gives them something to believe in.
Democrats, on the other hand, just don't do that to themselves. That makes all the difference.
