If Donald Trump was a Democrat and Democrats had control of the Senate, would they vote to convict?
We say, "Of course, they would!"
But, would they?

(989 posts)If Franken was a republican Senator, he would still be one.
Democrats and Republicans live in different universes.

Examples:
When Democrats have lost tough elections, they have conceded, power shifts, and the democracy goes on.
When Republicans have lost or looked like they would lose, they have made slimy moves to retain power (recent examples of this), they have committed many forms of election fraud (North Carolina, plus all sorts of voter inhibition laws), they have redrawn districts in their favor, they have threatened or implied they will refuse to accept as valid the results of the election (Trump - 2016).

(53,767 posts)They seek to retain power no matter what it takes.
They never stop plotting to do just that with dirty tricks, vote suppression, gerrymandering, Citizens United, Interstate Cross Check, treasonous alliances with Russiansyou name it, they do it.
What's not to love .
And on top of that, that party is the home of racist, white supremacists and trump. Who, btw, would never have made it out of the Democratic primaries. Hillary whipped him handily in his home state, remember.
We have to never stop pushing back against them.

(748 posts)There are some (well, many, actually, I think) that don't really understand partisan political reality.
Bettie
(16,091 posts)first off, he'd never have survived the primaries. We tend to hold our people to a higher standard.
Second, he'd have been asked, long ago, to leave the office.
If he were "ours"...he would already be impeached and out of office.

(15,265 posts)They voted on one charge of perjury and one charge of obstruction of justice. In the Senate trial none of the 45 Democratic Senators voted guilty on either charge, so he was acquitted.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impeachment_of_Bill_Clinton
"The trial in the United States Senate began right after the seating of the 106th Congress, in which the Republican Party held 55 Senate seats. A two-thirds vote (67 senators) was required to remove Clinton from office. 50 senators voted to remove Clinton on the obstruction of justice charge and 45 voted to remove him on the perjury charge; no member of his own Democratic Party voted guilty on either charge. Clinton, like Johnson a century earlier, was acquitted on all charges.:
Chemisse
(30,809 posts)Clinton's crime of perjury pales in comparison to the felonies Trump has allegedly committed, not to mention his treasonous activities.
Anyone who cares about this country and its democracy would (should) do whatever they can to fight Trump's efforts to demolish it.
CentralMass
(15,265 posts)The President was charged with perjuy and obstruction of justice and broke the law and those were by the definition impeachable offenses. Yet, all 45 Democratic Senators voted not guilty.

(32,685 posts)Impeach or I'm gone (at least in spirit). Doing nothing would make us just as disgusting and calculating as the rethugs. Seriously, what good are you if you can't defend our country? That should be their first priority, in addition to election reform.

(31,261 posts)You seem to be trying to equate democrat's morals with that of republicans, our politicians and democrats in general have very strong morals. There is no comparison.

(111,079 posts)I tend to agree with most of the comments above.
However, I think we should continue to investigate and gather more information before we vote to impeach. Sooner or later, it is going to become very difficult to defend Donald Trump. Eventually, he will be impeached or he will resign.
Or he will lose dramatically in the election of 2020 and take down the Republican Party with him, in my opinion.

(30,809 posts)Otherwise we have a divided nation and possible some kind of civil war or coup attempt.

Me neither, because it didn't happen. We follow the facts where they lead us and accept the results. It's who we are.

(50,267 posts)Look at the Franken allegations as an example. Poor Al was given the bum's rush before a panel could even be convened to investigate. If anything, Democrats act too quickly. When it comes to Trump, the GOP needs to recall what happened with Richard Nixon. There was no impeachment trial because members of his own party went to the White House and asked him to resign. Trump's crimes are shaking out to be far worse than Nixon's. The few remaining sane Republicans need to convince the rest to put country over party.
