Republicans Around The Country Are Working To Declare Democrats Unconstitutional

The lame-duck power plays by Republican legislatures in Michigan, North Carolina and Wisconsin to seize power from recently elected Democratic Party executive officials are just the latest egregious efforts by the Republican Party to deem Democrats unconstitutional.

What does it mean when Republicans deem Democrats unconstitutional? It means that Republicans do not believe that the Democratic Party can legitimately hold power. The GOP will use its power to enact last-minute laws to hurt Democratic constituencies and make it harder for Democrats to win power; if they somehow do, Republicans strip them of authority or prevent them from governing.

“We are going to have a very liberal governor who is going to enact policies that are in direct contrast to what many of us believe in,” said Robin Vos, the Republican Speaker of the House in Wisconsin, as he explained why Republicans would gut the authority of incoming Democratic Gov. Tony Evers.

For Republicans, political power is now no different than an exclusionary childhood clubhouse: No Democrats allowed.

This policy effort to refuse Democrats power, at all costs, did not begin with the lame-duck session of 2018. What’s happening now is a part of an ongoing process by Republicans in the courts and in elected office to increase power for their own wealthy interests, attack and divide Democratic Party constituencies and create voting obstacles that dilute equal representation.

Talk about a sense of entitlement. They've been demonizing the word "liberal" for so long they forgot its real meaning. How they conveniently overlook the fact that our country's economy was never stronger than when liberal democratic representatives had the reigns of power. I think it has a lot to do with our policies being driven by Kenysian economics rather than the bullshit theory of supply-side economics they've hitched their wagon to. Really all they care about are protectionist policies for the wealthy.

My wish for republicans is that one day they all get a planet of their own where they can enact whatever policies they want, free from any liberal interference (because we aren't there) and they can live with the consequences without subjecting the rest of us to their short-sightedness and selfishness.

This is the sort of maneuvering and procedural warfare I’m talking about, and the Republicans have been escalating it for two decades. And they’ve managed to entrench their power through these dubious procedures.

The result is that the structural environment is biased against Democrats and the Republicans have engineered it that way.

“The Republicans are behaving like a party that believes it will never be held accountable.”

What's so frustrating is that combating this shit is pretty tough to do when Republicans hold a majority in the state legislature thanks to gerrymandering. Elections have consequences (think 2010, 2014, 2016).

More and more people, too, are realizing what a tyranny of the minority system we have. For instance, getting and maintaining control of the US Senate is a really tall order for Democrats in spite of the fact we're the majority. Even in 2020, the odds are against us netting 4 seats. The odds of us ever getting to 55 or 60 seats is practically nil.
