who failed miserably. In fact Gore ended up losing not long after all that. So why would attempting to impeach Trump for things a million times worse and failing to get 2/3rds hurt Dems? Maybe it would make Republican's look corrupt as hell? And by not attempting to impeach, would that not be sending the message that what Trump has done is just dandy with Democrats? I think it would make us look weak but I am open for debate as to why present day is different from the 90's.
Snip: the Senate voted on whether to remove Clinton from office. The president was acquitted on both articles of impeachment. The prosecution needed a two-thirds majority to convict but failed to achieve even a bare majority. Rejecting the first charge of perjury, 45 Democrats and 10 Republicans voted not guilty, and on the charge of obstruction of justice the Senate was split 50-50. After the trial concluded, President Clinton said he was profoundly sorry for the burden his behavior imposed on Congress and the American people.

(33,032 posts)We have an infestation of the House right now.
The newly cleaned House will want to get some answers, and everyone wants to see Mueller's work completed. Impeachment is almost inevitable, but is not immediately necessary.

(8,223 posts)the impeachment managers largely lost their seats. Gingrich had to resign. Nixon did dirty stuff on the campaign, but the bottom line was that he used the FBI and the IRS to target his enemies while serving. He resigned when it became clear that enough republicans would vote to remove him in the Senate.
As much as I would celebrate Trump's removal, (with a perp walk please), we aren't there yet. Doing it and coming up short is a bad idea. I say let it ripen a bit. There are more shoes to drop, lets see where we are when they do.

(68,348 posts)Clinton's second presidential election. Had Clinton been running in 98...had that been a presidential year, he would have won. Impeachment increased his popularity...and the orange blob is running in 20...thus we should not impeach him into another term...no conviction then I say no impeachment...waste of time and money...and we could get four more years of Trump....six if you count the next two years. We need to play this smart in the political sense. By the way, the GOP electoral losses were so bad in 98, that Gingrich was forced to step down as speaker and resign.

(12,802 posts)Now I'm going to be a punctuation nazi:
The plural of Republican is Republicans.
Adding an apostrophe with the s for the plural is becoming more prevalent, and it's starting to bug me.
Sorry about that.
