That's what Time magazine is calling the journalists behind 2018's "Person of the Year," which was revealed exclusively Tuesday morning on "Today."
With a record number of reporters behind bars around the planet the Committee to Protect Journalists documented 262 cases in 2017 an avalanche of misinformation on social media and government officials from the United States to the Philippines dismissing critical, real reporting as "fake news," Time is spotlighting a handful of journalists who have one thing in common: They were targeted for their work.
For them, pursuing the truth has meant prison and harassment. In some cases, it has meant death.

(36,839 posts)The stout man with the gray goatee and the gentle demeanor dared to disagree with his countrys government. He told the world the truth about its brutality toward those who would speak out. And he was murdered for it.
Every detail of Jamal Khashoggis killing made it a sensation: the time stamp on the surveillance video that captured the Saudi journalist entering his countrys Istanbul consulate on Oct. 2; the taxiway images of the private jets bearing his assassins; the bone saw; the reports of his final words, I cant breathe, recorded on audio as the life was choked from him.
But the crime would not have remained atop the world news for two months if not for the epic themes that Khashoggi himself was ever alert to, and spent his life placing before the public. His death laid bare the true nature of a smiling prince, the utter absence of morality in the Saudi-U.S. alliance andin the cascade of news feeds and alerts, posts and shares and linksthe centrality of the question Khashoggi was killed over: Whom do you trust to tell the story?

(18,837 posts)A reporter asked Trump as he prepared to depart the White House for his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida who deserved to finish second for the designation, telling the president he assumed who his choice for first would be.
"Its called person of the year, right? Its no longer man of the year, right?" Trump replied.
"I dont know, thats up to Time Magazine," he continued. "Ive been there before. I cant imagine anybody else other than Trump."

(989 posts)I was prepared to be angry at BTS being chosen from the concerted efforts of fanatical K-Pop devotees. I think this celebrity worship thing has gone too far, and has overshadowed the very real and terrifying reality of journalists being killed and false news being disseminated to support the agendas of tyrants.
I hate being uninformed. Who/what is BTS.

You think I'm kidding? I put nothing past him since he's delusional.
Oh, and can we make sure we keep the bastard Kushner associated with the killers of Jamal?

(82,849 posts)How about the folks at the top of the profession, the ones who get paid the big bucks? Where have they been in the war on truth, Time? I don't mean to piss all over your choice, but journalists have not distinguished themselves in the past few years in following through on the Trump administration. For people who could devote endless hours and miles of column inches on the subject of Hillary Clinton's e-mails, you've shown a remarkable imperviousness to digging into the many sins and crimes of the Trump administration.
Is it because there's so much, you can't prioritize so you just let it go for the most part? Is it outrage fatigue, never much in evidence whenever the Republicans want to rev up a nontroversy to set their base off. Are the stories too complicated, but you can easily follow the Republican train of logic that concludes that tax dollars are paying for abortion because some health insurance covers women's health.
But then, nobody ever targets the chucktodds for their journalistic work. So maybe they really are the smart ones who know that they shouldn't rock the boat?

(14,173 posts)Because his cult followers will just look at that and think and say "see look! Trump is doing such great things that even the failing Times cannot help but put him on their cover!" And Trump himself has always gone by the motto, "Any publicity is good publicity"
