to go to prison for Donald Trump, or if maybe he should unload some REAL dirt.
Which we know he has.
And just to shut the prison door even tighter, along comes NY AG Letitia James to announce that she's going to be investigating everything, so that state charges can be pressed if Trump starts pardoning people.
Michael Cohen, it's time to start talking about Prague. Among other things. Mueller might write you a much nicer letter.
ON UPDATE: I think Cohen asked for early sentencing so he could see how bad his sentence would be without additional "cooperation," and to give Trump one more chance to pardon him. Trump is mad and probably won't pardon -- plus now Letitia James comes along, tossing threats from NY.
I bet Cohen doesn't go gently into Riker's Island.

In a possible sign of further trouble for the president, Cohen said he will continue cooperating with prosecutors, and one of his legal advisers said Cohen is also prepared to tell all he knows to Congress if asked.

Beyond the guilty pleas, it is unclear what Cohen has told prosecutors or what he has left to say, though one of Muellers prosecutors, Jeannie Rhee, said in court that Cohen has provided consistent and credible information about core Russia-related issues under investigation. Legal experts said Cohen could get his sentence reduced by cooperating.

(42,279 posts)Or harm to his family from more local sources---my theory is the reason he didn't co-operate more fully with SDNY is that he knows too many NYC mobsters and what they have done and he can't rat on them safely; they play for keeps.

(42,641 posts)None of these people have friends. They are conspirators and criminals. One hopes that Cohen will realize how much trouble he is in and be even more cooperative.
We can all hope that more states will initiate investigations and bring charges against Trump and his criminal partners.

and the prosecutors can consider recommending a further reduction in his sentence.
Barbara McQuade just said on MSNBC that he can request a further reduction, based on cooperation, for a period up to a year from today.

(b) Reducing a Sentence for Substantial Assistance.
(1) In General. Upon the government's motion made within one year of sentencing, the court may reduce a sentence if the defendant, after sentencing, provided substantial assistance in investigating or prosecuting another person.
(2) Later Motion. Upon the government's motion made more than one year after sentencing, the court may reduce a sentence if the defendant's substantial assistance involved:(A) information not known to the defendant until one year or more after sentencing;
(B) information provided by the defendant to the government within one year of sentencing, but which did not become useful to the government until more than one year after sentencing; or
(C) information the usefulness of which could not reasonably have been anticipated by the defendant until more than one year after sentencing and which was promptly provided to the government after its usefulness was reasonably apparent to the defendant.
(3) Evaluating Substantial Assistance. In evaluating whether the defendant has provided substantial assistance, the court may consider the defendant's presentence assistance.
(4) Below Statutory Minimum. When acting under Rule 35(b), the court may reduce the sentence to a level below the minimum sentence established by statute.

(10,721 posts)Cohen probably fears for his life and isn't going to confess to every crime not related to Trump. Mueller doesn't care about those other crimes, but SDNY does.

He'll be able to work his way up to a high paying for prison job assembling solar panels. The Warden always offered an open invitation to lunch and a tour of the facility, when he speaks a community functions.

(317 posts)IANAL, but if he were to seek a reduction, itd probably necessitate placating the SDNY team (who claimed so little cooperation on his part with them). Hed probably have to agree to rat out every instance of wrong-doing hes aware of which probably would guarantee family members would wind up behind bars, too. I think hes sacrificing his freedom for theirs. *Thats* how hes sparing them, if I remember his statement correctly.

(51,545 posts)Remember, Cohen and Felix Sater come from the same neighborhood and have been friends for over 30 years. Sater is Russian mafia, and developed Trump Soho. Cohen's Ukrainian father-in-law got him into that shady taxi business. https://www.rollingstone.com/politics/politics-news/a-brief-history-of-michael-cohens-criminal-ties-628875/
Cohen has spent his whole life around shady characters and has never had a legitimate job in his life. If everything he and his friends did came out, he'd end up in jail for a lot more than 3 years.

(268 posts)I imagine there are much bigger, scarier people whose dirty dealings he knows about. There's a terrific book- I think it was made into a movie- called "McMafia" that details how organized crime has become global, and how scary some of these players are. Trump is not a threat to Cohen at this point, and I'm guessing Cohen is trying to figure out exactly how much he can give SDNY on Trump without turning over too many other rocks that would prefer to remain in the dark.
