I was in jail for one day for a post someone found offensive. I dont know what or who. Now I am jailed for 3 days. I have been very careful about naughty words or perceived threats so I have no idea who is doing this or what they reported.
I have an alternative account I have been using, now I was warned about saying white trash. 🙄

(6,496 posts)It is big time suck for me plus I get upset over the comments people post. I've tried paring down friend lists, blocking people. Doesn't matter... There's always someone new to aggravate me on there. It's always friends of friends. I recently discovered you can use messenger without a Facebook account, so I do that instead now. It allows me to text people who have Facebook accounts without having the temptation of the newsfeed.

(8,445 posts)I only started because we were having a family reunion years ago, and it was the way we communicated to get it organized. Then all of these people started asking me to be their friend. At first I accepted requests, and then I started just ignoring them. I've only stayed on in order to see photos of some of the cutest kids in the world.
Anyway, I post practically nothing. I am not an active participant. It works well for me that way.

(7,611 posts)I can't stand to be on there for any length of time because of all the right-wing nonsense. Every time I think I've unfollowed enough people so that I won't see it, more of it creeps in. These days, I very rarely post anything and mainly go on to acknowledge birthdays and then get off as soon as possible.

I should add that trash is NOT synonymous with poor

white trash
wīt ˈtraSH/
nounINFORMALDEROGATORY
poor white people, especially those living in the southern US.
The label signifies lower social class inside the white population and especially a degraded standard of living. The term has been adopted for people living on the fringes of the social order, who are seen as dangerous because they may be criminal, unpredictable, and without respect for political, legal, or moral authority. The term is usually a racial slur, but may also be used self-referentially by working class whites to jokingly describe their origins or lifestyle
That's fine but from Wiki, white trash to me "The term has been adopted for people living on the fringes of the social order, who are seen as dangerous because they may be criminal, unpredictable, and without respect for political, legal, or moral authority"

I was very poor in my younger life, but I was never trash. The core me has always been of great quality. I just wear better clothes now and live in a nicer place and drive a nicer car. My bank account never determined what kind of person I was.
Edited to add: I can also afford to eat regular meals now.

(658 posts)Folks, white trash does not mean poor white people even if Wikipedia insists it does.
Take it from a southerner. Poor white people call other racist, nasty white people white trash. White trash has a very specific meaning - especially now with Trump in office. We're witnessing white-trashery on a daily basis from his Twitter feed and in how his administration is treating POC.
Autumn
(45,012 posts)It's not just Wikipedia that says white trash means poor white people. Every dictionary I've looked at says white trash is derogatory, disparaging and offensive against poor white people.

(12,645 posts)However, they're the type that keeps throwing the good money after disposable fun in the name of being "bad assed" or "edgy". They quit jobs rather than make the best of what they have and keep an eye out for better opportunities. They stay in bad situations if they're able to build their own little kingdoms, even if those kingdoms consist of sand castles and wishful thinking.
Which typically ends up with them reaching the age of 35 or 40 with very little in the bank, lots of bills and a bleak future that hurts their sense of entitlement and pride.
And then they turn around and blame their frustrations on others who never had the chances they did to improve their lives, and are struggling on scraps to begin with. Everyone else is to blame.
These white trash types just have a different view, albeit rather selfishly short-sighted, of what matters in life. They aren't "poor" folks by circumstances, they're almost always poor folks by choice.

(1,148 posts)...but they don't mean it seriously - they mean that someone else called them that. Many of the POC I know are offended by the term, and they are right: it implies that poverty is for POC, and that being poor and white is anomalous in some way. It kind of implies that everyone poor is trash.
People can equivocate all they want, but the term has racist and classist roots. It is used interchangeably with "trailer trash". I come from a working-class community, and when I went to an elite college, a lot of the white students there threw the term around freely.
It is true that there is a certain type of white person that is loutish and has no personal style or manners, and those people can be seen often at Trump rallies. Ugly clothes, ugly signs, ugly bumper stickers on their ugly pickup trucks, etc. And ugly attitudes and defiant illiteracy go with that. But I don't think these people are poor. IME these people look down on poor people. I think they are "trashy", uneducated people who have found a way to make a middle-class living - probably in careers where that isn't looked down upon. Small businesses, skilled labor, etc. I've encountered many of them, and to them there certainly is such a thing as "white trash", and it's not them. Even though "liberal" snobs in the corporate world would certainly call them that for their guns-and-pickups lifestyle and their ugly hairstyles and clothes.
Those trucks they drive can get pretty expensive. And being acquainted with a lot of Trump-humpers, they like to brag about how much money they have and the vacations they take.
Autumn
(45,012 posts)they aren't all White. After reading this thread I think it's a bigoted term.
violetpastille
(1,483 posts)Or that trashy behavior is default for non-whites. White people are supposed to be "better than" the implied trashiness of POC.
Hence the construct "white trash".
It comes out of the same ugly side of white culture that would call the Clintons n*****lovers.

(12,645 posts)It is subjective, but I'll bet you know people who have opportunities, but still choose to trash not only their own lives and futures, but the lives and futures of everyone around them simply because life hasn't lived up to their expectations.
They're the ones who live in trash, and demean others so they can feel they're better than the rest of us. These are people who see others as disposable.
Not the poor who are stuck in dead-end jobs they could rise out of if only they had a small portion of the opportunities those "above" them had.
I think we're talking across each other. And sometimes, one does have to judge - how much respect are you giving Erik and Jr. based on their actions?
Whether or not one would call them out on their cheating, distructive, disrespectful behavior at a high level or low level, I know I still couldn't give them any more respect than I would give just because they were living beings. Their own actions - not their situations - paint them as creatures I would hesitate to offer anything of value to if I saw they might have a need.
I've seen far more considerate and thoughtful people with signs begging at highway offramps than those two. And I've never, ever considered a begger trash. That's hard work, surviving by begging out in the elements.

(658 posts)They also didn't like that I used the word "Nazi" and "racist" in the same tweet. So, they added that to the other tweet using "white trash" as a reason for my suspension.
I appealed and told them that white trash is referring to white people who are willfully ignorant and racist and that Nazi's are, in fact, racists. White trash does not refer to poor white people. In fact, I've called Trump white trash numerous times and he's not poor. I have been poor in my life and I've never been white trash. I grew up in the south and the KKK were considered white trash at the time. It is not a racist slur toward the white race (so fucking stupid to even pretend it is.) Twitter did not comment back or explain what rule covers the rights of white trash Nazi racists.
So, for some reason, Twitter/FB are now cracking down on it. I think it's because the racist white trash Nazi P.O.S MFs in this country have been screaming about how not fair it is that they get "picked on" for being racist white trash Nazi P.O.S. MFs. And apparently, they are now a protected group.
So, a white woman originally from the south, originally from a very religious family, one who's been poor in her life, one who's eaten Cheese Whiz on Ritz Crackers and consumed her share of Bud Light, is now not allowed to use the term "white trash" on social media because that just might offend white trash.
This country just keeps getting more stupid by the minute.

(22,311 posts)It's a slur because it means "white people acting like POC."
Charlotte Little
(658 posts)It does not. It means white people who are ignorant and racist. It's used as a way to socially shame bullies and those who willfully ignore rules and facts. It really sums up Trump and his family. It is not a racial slur in the least. It's a derogatory term but not a racist one. Sometimes, white isn't even used, just trash. But you know what one means when using trash to describe a MAGA in your face.
WhiskeyGrinder
(22,311 posts)Charlotte Little
(658 posts)The folks in my family who are considered white trash...by the rest of my family...drive around with confederate flags on their pick-up trucks.
WhiskeyGrinder
(22,311 posts)Because racism is not limited to people who don't have a lot of money, drive pickups or are uneducated.
Charlotte Little
(658 posts)Neither one of my cousins are poor. They have jobs, wives, children. They are Christians. They pay their bills and their taxes. They live in modest homes in Mississippi.
They also drive pickup trucks with confederate flags. The trucks are nice and I'm sure they make the payments on time. But the flags? Trashy. And their pride to have them on their trucks? Trashy.
They also still refer to people of color as "colored boys" or "colored girls," something they picked up from their parents who picked it up from their parents. Trashy. After my grandmother's funeral in 2013, I watched them smoke and drink beer - both fine - all while talking smack about Obama. And by smack, I mean "let your imagination fill in the blanks here."
They think they are superior to POC. Trashy. They think men are superior to women. Trashy.
They voted for Trump (I know because they were on my FB family list...until I blocked them) and I'm fairly certain they still support him, although I don't know for sure as I haven't seen them in well over two years. But they did vote for him. Trashy.
They are white. I'm white. They are trash in my mind, but not because they act in a certain way that isn't considered sophisticated. Not because they hunt deer. Not even because they watch Fox News and sit around like a bunch of rednecks (which they are, nothing wrong with that).
They are white trash, because I know in private they don't just call POC "colored boys" and "colored girls" - which is a way to put them in their place in their minds and totally unacceptable - they call POC the word I won't use on here or anywhere. I also know personally how at least one of them treats his wife all while be a hypocritical Christian. Trashy.
They are an embarrassment to me because they are white trash in my family. And I'm no perfect peach myself. But I am not anything like them once you get past my sentence about making car payments on time. So, my trashy is not that kind of trashy, if you get my meaning.
And to be clear, Trump is white trash because he is:
- willfully ignorant
- hypocritical
- racist (I'd argue a full blown white supremacist)
- vicious
- cruel (especially to POC/women/children)
- misogynistic
- sexually perverted
- a con man and sleaze
- a bully
- and a fucking traitor to this great nation
So, you are correct, WG. Racism is not limited to people who don't have a lot of money, drive pickups, or who are uneducated.
Croney
(4,657 posts)That would be undeniably racist. Like its white counterpart.
In case you aren't aware, there is a term used for black Americans. And it's used most by the white trash in this country.
Rorey
(8,445 posts)But I can't say that you're wrong when it comes to how some people use the term.
As I said above, I'm not going to use that term again. It's been a long time since I've said those words, and they were careless and mindless and unnecessary.
