Anyone remember the Caravan of Doom? No?

Last weekend there was a little direct action at the border between California and Mexico. For all the breathless coverage of doom and despair before the midterm election, there's been approximately jack squat reported since then:

Why Were These Interfaith Leaders Arrested at the US-Mexico Border?

As the khaki-clad military and the SWAT-uniformed Border Patrol moved in, carrying large guns with live ammo and billy clubs, the demonstrators behind the line of doves began softly singing civil-rights spirituals. “We are not afraid,” they sang, “we will stand for liberation, because we know why we were made.” Again and again and again. “We are not afraid. We will stand for liberation, because we know why we were made.”

Each time the riot-gear-clad teams moved in to make arrests, frog-marching the nonresisting arrestees, including a blind woman, up the hill to waiting vehicles, the crowd cheered for the person taking the arrest. And they sang again, their words an exorcism of the cruelty taking place before them. “We are not afraid. We will stand for liberation, because we know why we were made.” Then “La liberta es mi unica bandera,” they chanted, to drum beats from the musicians marching with them: “Liberty is my only flag.”

I guess this demonstration wasn't visually compelling enough to warrant news coverage? Or it was too hard to make sense of it? Or it's not a portrayal of religious people that the media are comfortable with? Who can say?
