Why did Flynn force Mueller to call him out?

Mueller called bullshit concerning Flynn's attempt to look like he had been somehow tricked into lying to the FBI. Of course Flynn should have expected that reaction from Mueller.

But the real question is why would Flynn do such a stupid thing? Mueller had already recommended no jail time for Flynn due to his cooperation. So what need was there for Flynn to try to make himself look less culpable?

As a lawyer, one of the first things you learn about how to handle yourself in a court room is to shut the hell up when things are going good for your client. But I have seen lawyers do what Flynn's lawyers did by attempting to "gild the lily", making an already good thing look even better, and in the course of doing that screw everything up.

Flynn's lawyers should have told him to just shut up and should have refused to submit any info to the court that attempted to make Flynn look like a victim. There is no sentence shorter than no jail time, so WTF?

My only conclusion is that a lot of these people are far more stupid than I ever imagined.

In the responding memo, Mueller maintains Pence was lied to.

If that sticks, Pence may well skate free to be the next President

Rachel had stuff about Pence lying as part of the transition team. I worry this Mueller memo may cloud that and give Pence some cover.

And they state again that they do not recommend no jail time - they recommend a sentence at the low end of the range that includes the possibility of no jail time. Given what Flynn did, I hope it presses the judge to give him a little cell time to reflect on his BS.

Lock him up!!

Blindly? taking Pence's word and sticking with the no jail time crap, just as trump wanted.

Flynn is still cooperating; it could be that his attorneys did this to help the investigation. It gave Mueller's team the opprtunity to publicly disclose details that refute the claim by Individual-1 and others that Flynn was coerced.

He's going to be a star on the conservative media rounds so he wants to make as much money as possible.

Think Ollie North.

Legal commentators at the time were saying that Flynn's "the FBI tricked me by not warning me about lying" strategy was not congruent with the requirement that Flynn accept responsibility. In my opinion, Flynn thought that he could say whatever he wanted to discredit the investigation, and Mueller wouldn't respond.

I agree that Mueller has used filings to get information out ahead of prosecutions, but I'm not sure that that's what happened this time. I think Flynn overreached.

Flynn or Flynn's lawyers know that Mueller would respond. A response to a defendant's filing is standard by the prosecution in these type of cases.
