New Jersey has made history, becoming the first state to ban the use of wild and exotic animals in circuses! Previously passing both the Senate and Assembly, Noseys Law was today signed into law by Governor Murphy.
Nosey's Law is named after long-suffering circus elephant Nosey, who was confiscated and placed in a sanctuary by local Alabama authorities last year; her former owner faces cruelty charges.
Working with local advocates and bill sponsors Senator Nilsa Cruz-Perez and Assemblyman Raj Mukherji, ADI supported the bill with data and testimony. This historic victory would not however have been possible without your help. Thank you so much to supporters who contacted their representatives, attended rallies, and got behind our Stop Circus Suffering campaign.
With New Jersey leading the way, which state will be next to take action? Hawaii is close to banning the import of dangerous wild animals acts, while Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania are all considering similar measures.
The federal bill to end traveling wild animal acts nationwide, the Traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act, is also gaining bipartisan support. Find out how you can support TEAPSPA (H.R.1759) here.
As this victory shows, together we can stop circus suffering in the US.
Yours for the animals,
Animal Defenders International
