Trump is toast: This week really was the beginning of the end for the PresidentHe is done. Donald Trump will be forced to resign the presidency before November 2020.
It's always looked like this might be where we were heading. But now it is far easier to believe its going to happen. The case against Trump has barreled past the tipping point. And theres nothing he can do to reverse it.
Lets break it all down.

(7,596 posts)He could have lived the rest of his cushy life with most people unaware of his crimes.
But his ego and need for attention drove him to seek a job where your life is constantly under a microscope and now his corruption is being exposed to the world. His downfall is entirely on himself.

(53,061 posts)He would keep taking greater risks going higher and higher until the wings melted.
He openly opined that he could shoot someone and get away with it.
He was addicted to conning people and wanted to see how high he could go.

(1,105 posts)if somehow the feds miss him, the newly elected Attorney General for the state of New York will not. She ran on a platform of bringing him and his crew to justice and was elected by a margin of 62 to 36 percent. She's got the power, the resources, and the will of the people behind her.
His brand is worthless, once he's without power no one will ever lend him a dime, he's the laughing stock of the world. Teflon Don's non-stick surface has been terminally compromised. He's taking the family and the GOP down with him.
You can count on it.

(5,491 posts)I put his chances at 50% or greater, honestly.
I dont agree Republicans will care. Theyre already justifying his crimes before they were proven. Their response will be a simple so what?
There will be too much tribalism to have any meaningful conversation. Trump will use the tribalist atmosphere to claim persecution, and it will work to some extent. He doesnt need to prove his innocence - he only needs to derail any momentum against impeachment.
His poll numbers will not change. Nothing can change his poll numbers at this point. He has a cult following. His cult followers treat him as the only legitimate news source.

(7,142 posts)No way he runs for president, he is miserable, and scared shitless. He may even have a nervous breakdown before long, snorting all that Adderall isn't good for you. The Trump criminal enterprise is going to come crashing down.

(10,721 posts)Trump won't pull off a near-sweep of the battleground states like he did last time (look no further than the mid-term results in WI, MI, etc.). He won't be facing a candidate who has been the target of hate for 30 years. No last minute announcement by Comey about a media-embellished investigation into our candidate. Trump is no longer new and is now even more hated than he was 2 years ago. And I'm not sure Russia can have the same amount of impact this next time.
The days of a candidate winning 400+ electoral votes are long gone, but I do think a landslide by today's standards may be in the offing. I won't be surprised if our candidate gets in that 350-370 ballpark the way Obama did in 2008.

(5,491 posts)I think most vote for simplistic reasons like the economy. Others vote purely on tribalism / Facebook politics. Most people only follow politics at a superficial level.
Garrett78
(10,721 posts)It ceases to be viable absent those things. I don't think economic conditions have any real impact on Cult45.
I simply think we're going to outnumber the deplorables in enough of the battleground states to win handily in 2020. I think we'll have record-high turnout for Democrats. And I can't imagine Trump winning any of the states Clinton won. Not VA, CO, NV, or any of the rest. MI and PA were blue for 6 straight presidential elections prior to 2016. WI was blue for 7 straight. I think all 3 will come back to their senses in 2020.
Takket
(21,552 posts)he has no path to victory without the states that he BARELY won in 2016, and the blue wave was a tsunami in those 3 states in 2018

(9,117 posts)Democrats did better than they did in Texas in decades, Latinos are a plurality (And some of them are FINALLY realizing that Agent Orange is dissing them), and more people vote in presidential elections. And without the Big Red Capstone State, Republicans dont get to the White House.
Quixote1818
(28,927 posts)and could go into recession. People are jumping ship big time and behind closed doors Republicans are telling the press they are about to jump shit.
There has been no fat lady but this is looking pretty dam bleek for Trump who already has an approval rating around 40%.

(8,610 posts)I think trump is toast because the republicans have a better chance of keeping the White House by running a victorious Mueller as an Eisenhower candidate. Just as Ike saved us from the Nazis, Mueller saved us from Russia. A republican White House will be their best chance of saving their precious Tax Bill. Its always been about that tax cut for the rich.
erronis
(15,222 posts)to get some other better (R)?
I think not. If anything, Mueller and any sentient (R)s will leave the party of Nixon/Gingrich/Reagan/MacDonnel/Ryan/etc.
No, its all about keeping the tax cut for the wealthy which, if you look at the recent trajectory of the deficit will make it mathematically impossible to pay SS, Medicare and Medicaid. Biggest redistribution of wealth in US history. All of this other drama merely diverts our attention.

Nixon had not been proactive enough to steal the Supreme Court and to seed all the other courts with with RW oligarch types.
Nixon did not have a rabidly supportive base that has a cult-like fixation of loyalty to Trump.
In other words, we still had a functioning 3-branch government but it's disintegrating now, Not at all sure how this will play out.

(7,142 posts)The new NY AG is going to put the hurts on the Trump crime family. This could take 10 - 15 years but what money Trump has is going to be a lot less, whether he goes to jail or not. Trump without money would be the same as his being in jail. He can't get a loan from any banks for a reason.

(16,925 posts)I certainly agree with the original posting (Trump is toast) but I can also see the lack of faith in the American electorate. After all, they voted this guy in to begin with, didn't they?
Just like the mid-terms, we've REALLY gotta' GOTV and work our asses off to continue this cleansing process - our own country is at stake.

(22,976 posts)Up to this point, the majority of Republicans in office have stuck with Trump and propped him up or turned a blind eye. Including those Rs whove done nothing more than remain silent these past two years. None of them have taken any serious steps to speak out against the wall-to-wall blatent lying, corruption, nepotism, profiteering, not to mention mind-boggling mismanagement of funds and a disinformation campaign that would be the envy of Joseph Goebbels.
As long as the Republican Party decides it wants to keep taking it out on America and democracy, Trump will stand right where he is now: embattled and bruised, but to what extent? For the good of the country, the GOP must decide that their stable genius should be let go, and let the law of the land take its course. But will they?
For all the take-the-offensive strategies the incoming congressional Democrats might employ, please do whatevers necessary to convince the GOP to spring the trap-door beneath their delusional, law-breaking figurehead (whos currently posing as a fascist American president).

(7,142 posts)They are in safe, gerrymandered districts. The Senate is the key. I expect a lot of nasty stuff is going to come out yet from Mueller and from the FBI in numerous states. Republican senators are going to have to make a decision whether clinging to Trump will get them reelected or not. Remember, Senators are elected state wide.
I don't expect Republican senators to do the right thing for the country, I expect they will do the right thing to get them reelected. It will be up to Republicans in the Senate to decide.
