Lonely Parrot Goes Shopping Online With Alexa While Owners Out
https://www.thedailybeast.com/lonely-parrot-goes-shopping-online-with-alexa-while-owners-out
Talk about a captive audience. Rocco, an apparently lonely and, uh, peckish African Grey parrot in Berkshire UK, has become so used to hearing his owners talk to Amazon's Alexa, he started doing it himself when they were out of the house. So far, the feathered fowl has ordered watermelon, strawberries, raisins, ice cream and even broccoli. The bird has also commanded the home robot to tell him jokes and play love songs. Rocco's owner Marion Wischnewski told The Times of London that she often comes home to Rocco dancing to romantic music, which she says is indicative of his sweet personality. Because of a parental lock feature, none of the orders for food have so far gone through, but his owner always has to check that he hasn't scheduled events or added to her online grocery lists. Rocco and Alexa chat away to each other all day, she said. Then I have to check the shopping list and cancel all the items hes ordered.

(182,736 posts)The Dan Patrick show. He used to do Sports Center with Olbermann.
They were joking "Alexa buy me a car" and other such things and they got deluged with calls emails and tweets to stop. People who had Alexa and were playing their show on radio or the tv simulcast said Alexa was actually buying them the things Dan and the crew were mentioning.

(146,284 posts)It can be a PITA to get a parrot to begin talking. You have to repeat what you want the feather-headed critter to say, over and over again until it figures it out. The first few phrases are the hardest. So, tell Alexa to say the phrases 20 times, every 30 minutes or so. The bird will learn to say the things.

(23,301 posts)Im sad that hes lonely though. Birds are incredibly social and are often anxious when left alone for long periods of time. My son has a small parrot thats almost 2. His life span is 20-25 years...shorter than the life span of larger parrots. On the days when we are all out of the house for longer than 4-5 hours...I take Kiwi with me to work so he has interaction or take him on errands in the car in his little travel crate. He loves rides in the car to the grocery store or Ace Hardware. The clerks at Ace will give him a kernel of popcorn and he thinks thats the best. Birds who hange at home a lot can be destruct to their enviroment or themselves.

(9,865 posts)Living alone in an apartment all day is a kind of prison for a social being like this, who was evolved for an extremely lush and complexly stimulating jungle environment, full of other birds, and sounds.

With luck maybe Alexa would have a slip of the audio circuits and order jail time for the owner.

His last words ("You be good, see you tomorrow. I love you" were the same words that he would say every night when Pepperberg left the lab.

(5,914 posts)African Grey parrots are insanely smart, among the smartest of all birds. They've exhibited vocabularies and performance on certain cognitive skills equal to that of human preschoolers.
