(31,798 posts)Eisenhower warned us about the Military Industrial Complex. Presidents have ignored that warning on a regular basis ever since.

(706 posts)He can put troops in or pull them out, without asking anyone.
I don't understand the push back. We all want them out. It's said here all the time. "Stop killing brown people." Some people say putin told him to get out. Maybe so. Who cares, we need to get out.

(706 posts)We can't fix Syria without killing Assad and kicking Russia out of the region. Short of that, get the hell out. Next, Afghanistan. Enough is enough.

(3,479 posts)But fuck it, Trump needs a temporary poll bounce, so let's do this!
Alea
(706 posts)Out of the White House and into jail. That said, I'd like to see us out of the region. Don't forget that we will probably keep air assets available to help the Kurds when needed. One thing I wish we had done is carve out an area of Northern Iraq for the Kurds for a permanent Country of their own. Turks wouldn't have liked it but I don't give a crap about what Turkey likes or doesn't like.

(115,267 posts)Trump just pulled the decision out of his ass and didn't tell the Pentagon or Congress. Really a stupid move. And ISIS has not been defeated; that's bullshit.

(31,798 posts)I know Syria fairly well. I have been there several times. Where exactly is ISIS currently in Syria?
The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,267 posts)or the Pentagon probably isn't the way to do it. It's probably just a thing Trump suddenly decided to do for reasons best known to him, if he even has reasons.

(31,798 posts)Which would have happened if he told them before. I hope we get out of Afghanistan next -- a hopeless war which we can not win.

The Velveteen Ocelot
(115,267 posts)But guys like Bolton have always thought there should be a permanent presence of US troops in Syria and elsewhere in the Middle East, which of course is insane. But even those who think troops need to be removed at some point are concerned that Trump's sudden decision to do it right now, a decision he seems to have pulled out of his ass with no forethought and without consulting with anybody (except maybe Putin) is unwise, possibly dangerous, and probably something the Russians want.

(9,772 posts)Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) told Pence that he was "personally offended" to read about the decision in the news rather than hearing from the president or his aides. Graham has grown close to Trump and has generally praised him after criticizing the president during the 2016 campaign.
Sen. Graham looks a bit peaked in the picture on this story.
