Girl, 8, killed by train after mother forces her to cross under freight car to catch bus, cops say

The California mother of an 8-year-old girl who was killed by a train was charged with child neglect after ordering her daughter to take a perilous shortcut in order to catch a bus.

Joy Harris lost her life under a freight car on Monday night after mom Joy Collins told her and her 9-year-old brother to cross under the train, according to Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer.

The girl's older brother went first as the train remained stationary and made it safely, according to authorities. However, the train started moving after Joy made the same attempt.

Dyer said during a press conference on Tuesday that little Joy was reluctant to slide under the train. Her mother yelled "hurry up," according to the Fresno Bee.

Collins had made the kids do the same dangerous shortcut at least seven times before, according to Dyer.

The mother and her children were trying to get to a bus stop in Fresno when Joy was killed. The train that was blocking them was about a mile long, Dyer said.
