Steal Slat Fencing is not a Wall

Repairing fencing where it is appropriate is not what Trump was talking about during the campaign. He can spin this thing all he wants, but fencing was never a controversial item.

Trump's minions did not chant "Fix That Fence, and the taxpayers will pay for it." As you can tell, it doesn't have quite the same ring to it.

<snip>"The Democrats, who know Steel Slats (Wall) are necessary for Border Security, are putting politics over Country. What they are just beginning to realize is that I will not sign any of their legislation, including infrastructure, unless it has perfect Border Security. U.S.A. WINS!" Trump, who leads the Republican party, wrote in an early morning tweet.<snip>

1. Oddly he proposes the steel slat fence at the SAME TIME He removes Deripaska's sanctions

Russian billionaire Oleg Deripaska was president of aluminium giant Rusal. He stepped down from that role but still remains a benefactor.

This is from Feb 2018
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.cnbc.com/amp/2018/02/23/russian-magnate-deripaska-to-quit-role-as-rusal-president.html

"Hong Kong-listed Rusal is one of the world's largest aluminium producers. Deripaska's En+ owns a 48 percent stake in Rusal, which is a big consumer of hydroelectricity produced by En+'s power companies."

Guess we can figure out who's going to get the bid for the "steel wall" as well as all the other steel for infrastructure/oil pipelines etc., now that the sanctions are off Deripaska.
He was Manafort's boss.

2. I think you are stretching with that connection

A raw aluminum manufacturer wouldn't be bidding on a construction contract for installation of steel fencing. Wouldn't be surprised if there was a crony connection, but I really really doubt it has anything to do with Deripaska.

5. Once the wall is epoxy-coated, who knows if it's steel or aluminimum, hey?

Mobsters are going to mob. The big money is in bypassing quality control and selling the cheapest materials around.

In reality, I'm betting on it being cheap scrap Chinese Steel sold and shipped through intermediaries who will skim off the top for their cut that will be used for that "big, beautiful slatted steel" wall - a wall that needs to be so quickly built that they don't have time to ensure the materials are what they've been contracted to be.
Steel is steel, right?

Disclaimer, I used to be a project manager on Federal shipboard installation projects and often had to chemically or otherwise mechanically prove and report out that the steel or aluminum we were providing for decking, foundations and masts was the correct type and quality for the job before we started welding.

I doubt any legitimate U.S. - or Canadian - steel companies with real workers are going to benefit; a big, useless physical border wall is way too profitable for commodities brokers, transportation companies, and other financial shells to let regular folks be able to make a livable wage and real work to be accomplished.
(I wonder how much the Chao family might be making...?)

Russian Aluminum will benefit from being used to support the "pop up" building infrastructure and any non-physical "wall" components such as drones, sensor casings, poles, etc.. over the more expensive and quality controlled U.S. Aluminum.

6. Almost all new steel contains some scrap, and much is pure scrap

The beauty of steel is it can be recycled indefinitely and still be good. So...yeah,Trump’s steel slat fence probably is old scrap.
