NEW YORK (AP) Retired NASA mathematician Katharine Johnson, who turned 100 last summer, has waited long enough to tell her own story.
Johnsons Reaching for the Moon is an autobiography for middle graders that will be published next fall, Atheneum Books for Young Readers announced Thursday. Johnson was one of the pioneering black women featured in the book and film Hidden Figures, in which she was played by Taraji P. Henson. Johnson and such colleagues as Dorothy Vaughan were vital in helping NASA successfully launch flights into space, and eventually to the moon, in the 1960s.
Johnson said in a statement that she wanted young people to believe they could do anything, no matter their race or gender. I knew who I was and what I was capable of, she said.

(64,971 posts)I like that it's being written for kids. Seems like a great idea, to me.
My favorite line spoken by her character in Hidden Figures is to the guy that would become her life partner. "We work at Nasa because we wear glasses." Just a terrific piece of writing in that scene.

(3,557 posts)My oldest, who is 10, wants to grow up and be a scientist and work at NASA. I couldnt be more proud of her. Shes smart and hard working and, thanks to the women who came before her, such a goal is well within her reach.

My only wish is that it had come out 40 years ago.

(32,617 posts)... and what she stands for. I love her awesome story and it fits quite well with Michelle Obama's message to today's young women in "Becoming." I'd be very interested in reading Katherine Johnson's autobiography when it comes out.
