Kansas GOP senator Pat Roberts considering retirement in 2020

BY LISA HAGEN - 12/20/18 03:41 PM EST

Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.) is considering retiring from the Senate and will decide early next year whether he’ll run for a fifth term in 2020, he told Politico in an interview.

Roberts, who’s been serving in Congress since the 1980s, would be 84 by the November 2020 election.

The senator’s comments to Politico come on the heels of a Wednesday editorial from The Kansas City Star urging Roberts to retire and “step aside to allow other qualified candidates to seek the office.”

"We're going to think long and hard about it and then we'll make a decision very quickly," Roberts said in a Thursday interview with Politico.

As bad as the 2018 Senate map was for Democrats, 2020 is even worse for Republicans. The Democrats lost two net seats in the Senate, a sparkling effort, relatively speaking. The Republicans are looking at some pretty daunting races, and if Roberts decides not to run, it's another chance at a pick up for the Democrats. As worst, it means that Republicans are going to have to spend money retaining Roberts' seat; money they won't be able to spend elsewhere.

It’s a long shot, sure, but if Dems pull it off, we’re looking at a Dem majority Senate in 2021.

I think the dopes I live with would vote him in in an open casket. He has been 84 for 30 years!

Can we win his seat? I do not know but is certainly would be nice.

IMO.....If Laura does a good job there will be a better chance we can win it, if she does an outstanding job they will want to balance that out, ya know ya don't want things to be too good or you turn into one of them libruls. If she does a bad job (not ever going to happen) we lose the seat to another 34 year old 84 year old gasbag.
