And over something as dumb as the wall...
Trump is trying to bully Mitch into removing the 60-vote cloture rule in general so a simple majority in the Senate can pass any bill they want.
Mitch must be extremely frustrated. Womp Womp.
I hope Trump forces this. We're less than 2 years from Democratic Control of the Senate, House and Executive. This would give quite a bit of power to THE Party that represents the people and has been starved of control.

(22,912 posts)Republicans in the Senate can pass all that they want to with a simple majority then but it would never get past the Democratic House. And in two years they most likely would deeply regret the rules change. All over 5 Billion toward a wall no one but the hard core right really wants. Trump sure knows how to negotiate, doesn't he?

On the other hand, I fully expect him to prepare that shit sandwich and wolf it down with a jowly grimace.

(3,433 posts)If he overrides the 60 votes, that will give the Dems more leverage to do it if they take control in 2020. He's not going to do it for something as senseless and unpopular the wall.

(11,256 posts)He nuked the filibuster to confirm Gorsuch and Kavanaugh because appointing conservatives to the Supreme Court was always one of his top (if not THE top) priorities. I doubt McConnell feels that strongly about this stupid wall, and certainly not enough to cross a line that can then be used against him starting as early as 2021.

(3,363 posts)Breaking the Supreme Court cloture rule works for him, because only the Senate confirms justices. But legislation requires the House, and Democrats are about to control that, so having a simple majority in the Senate won't allow him to pass legislation easier.

We have rules to follow. I want to put a stop to this practice of the Senate breaking its rules to change its rules. I will not vote to turn the Senate into a rule-breaking institution and I hope that my colleagues will not.

(145,086 posts)The Democrats could adopt single payer if they take control of the White House and the Senate and keep control of the House in 2021. Otherwise, it will take 60 votes to in the Senate
