Some Senate Republicans are proposing a reauthorization of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in a last-ditch attempt to rescue funding for President Trumps border wall.
As a motion to proceed to the House-passed measure providing $5.7 billion for the border wall stalled on the Senate floor, some Republicans proposed at a private lunch meeting to add protections for undocumented immigrants in order to pick up Democratic support.
I dont see any reason to proceed to a bill that cant pass, said Sen. Jeff Flake (Ariz.), a Republican who voted against a motion to proceed to the House bill, which keeps 25 percent of government funded until Feb. 8.
Flake said he wants to find a bill that can pass.
I think one that could if were going to reopen this thing to add more money for a wall or steel slats, or whatever you want to call it, then throw DACA in too, Flake said, adding that several colleagues support his position.

(5,267 posts)Schumer already tried offering many millions that could have been used for both border security and wall, but only if DACA protections were included and Trump rejected the deal because his hardline rightwingers including Stephen Miller wouldn't allow the compromise.

One would think the author of "Art of the Deal" would understand about negotiating from a position of weakness.

(26,035 posts)...so the only way to avert a shutdown is by enacting the current CR (including wall funding).
I suspect the Republican proposal is for thebSenate to first introduce and pass a DACA bill, then vote to pass the current CR as-is, with the intention that the Democratic-controlled House can then pass the DACA bill when it first convened in January.
and then, of course, Trump vetoes that bill, having already gotten his wall funded. He wins, we lose.
Seriously, if Democrats are stupid enough to accept that compromise, we deserve to be the minority party.
