Belgian soccer fans sing chant about burning Jews

Soccer fans in Belgium chanted about burning Jews during a match in the city of Bruges, Belgian media reported.

La Derniere Heure published footage from the Aug. 26 match on Wednesday. It shows dozens of fans celebrating their local team’s victory over Brussels’ Anderlecht team that day by singing in Flemish: “My father was in the commandos, my mother was in the SS, together they burned Jews ’cause Jews burn the best.”

The chant, whose use was first reported by the media in 2015, has proliferated in the Netherlands and Belgium in recent years. In some cases, fans chant it to taunt counterparts from rival teams that are seen as historically Jewish. Some fans say Anderlecht is such a team, although that soccer club is not famously associated with Jews.

But the chant has appeared in situations connected to neither Jews nor soccer, including a high school graduation party in 2016 near Amsterdam.

Not only has there been a latent (if small) undertone of neo-fascist sentiment in the Germanic countries for decades (Belgium is over two thirds Dutch-speaking), the soccer matches bring out the worst in them. Just this past week, I was coming home from Paris by train, and when changing in Düsseldorf, which is far from being a hotbed of rightist sentiment, there were dozens of cops in full riot gear. Not expecting an invasion of fanatic Muslim immigrants, but rather hoardes of drunken, violent gangs of soccer hooligans from a game nearby. England may be famous for them, but they are just as crazy here on the continent as well, and they are not out there to promote the brotherhood of man.

Anti Semitism and Racism have almost predictively bubbled up from the shadows again.

People are people but some just can’t abide by that creed.

It is a sickness that we have been unable to completely cure, it bursts forth every 80 years or so.

11. The teams need to be put on notice

Of course they'll say that they're not responsible for their fans behavior. Also, I would like
to believe this represents a minority of assholes. Decent people should let the team know they
won't be attending (withholding their euros) until the team takes action. Anyone chanting that
shit needs to be immediately escorted outside.
