New airplane seat that claims to make flights cheaper would basically require passengers to stand

Italian airline seat manufacturer Aviointeriors has come up with a design for an airplane seat that it says would make flights a lot cheaper.

But the seat comes with a catch: Passengers would essentially have to stand up throughout the flight.

According to Aviointeriors, the Skyrider 2.0's upright passenger position would allow airlines to install the seats at a reduced pitch — a word that refers to the distance between a row of seats and the one in front of it. While a reduced pitch would mean less legroom for passengers, the manufacturer's representative told us that the seat design would still "maintain an adequate comfort" for passengers.

According to the manufacturer, the compact design of the seat would enable airlines to accommodate 20% more passengers on planes. The Skyrider 2.0 is also lightweight, weighing 50% less than standard economy class seats.

That really made me laugh. Anyone who has recently flown anywhere knows how insufferable and uncomfortable the seating arrangements are. The meathook method might very well be the next logical step. After standing, of course.

Who comes up with these lousy ideas. Sadists?

I will not fly cattle class anymore. If you buy a seat in first class, it costs several times what a seat in cattle class costs. BUT, if you use airline miles, it only costs twice as much. I guess that tells me where to spend my miles, and I can earn lots of them from non-flying activity. I have a credit card from my preferred airline (well, it's not really favored by me, but I hate American Airlines less than I despise the others, especially United) and I'm in the I-Dine program, plus I can get miles from survey sites, so I can get a first class ticket about once every two years or so.

"Economy" class is just simply pure hell, it does not surprise me that the airlines are planning to make it even more unbearable.

But for a trip from Seattle to, say, Chicago, Washington, D.C., or the East Coast, I'll take the train.

I don't imagine that the airlines would ever lose so much money that they'd re-think the cattle-car approach. But you never know...

I get tossed out of whack by the time difference every time. If I have to arrive as complete wreck each time, I'll take a boat instead.

But when I'm back in the States, I have lots to do and very little time in which to do it, so have no choice. In less than 4 weeks, I have to go Düsseldorf-Paris-Atlanta-Charleston-Dallas-New York-Dallas-Washington-Atlanta-Düsseldorf. If I had to do all that by boat and train, I'd be on the road for six weeks and not even have time to stop to say hi anywhere. I'm too old to be playing Phileas Fogg.

Even if they paid me the fare instead of the other way around.

I think there should be a Federal law that airline executives should be required by law to travel commercially, and in the cheapest seats their airlines offer.

I think we'd all be absolutely amazed at the improvement in service. It's a miracle!

A few years ago, here in Düsseldorf, Lufthansa inserted one of their executives into the management of their biggest rival, which just went bust last year (pure coincidence, no doubt). Now they founded a cheapie airline with horrible seats, lousy service, and even a hot drink Gestapo that confiscates coffee and tea from boarding passengers (I am not making this up--they have done it to me, too), so they have to buy it at inflated prices on board. They are now withdrawing from the Düsseldorf market altogether, and only the cheapie airline will be offering flights on the former Lufthansa routes.

and to the bottom of a seat track and having to have a three point restraining system in place, or a cross point belt across the chest, it will not happen, a fucking lap belt will not be enough during take off and landing. And if someone, which many do, bring bags on boards that have to go under the seat, this system will not be able to meet the evacuation requirements from an airplane in a emergency of 90 seconds, if you have a body blocking the exits. Then if the poles anchored to the ceiling do the seats go up and down to accommodate lets say 3 foot tall kid being about 6 or seven years old................

And, just think, if you have kid with a car seat being planted on the seat, good luck ...................the revenue per passenger mile concept cost will not work......................amazing.................instead of making the plane more comfortable they come up with this fiasco..........................

was the very best of all. Two by two seating on planes that otherwise had 3 and 2 cabin configuration. Meals were still being served when other airlines were eliminating them. And two free glasses of wine or champagne with the meal. I only ever flew them once, but it was wonderful.

My Northwest flight was delayed, out of National Airport, and I was going to miss my connection (the last one, for the day) in Detroit. So they switched me to Midwest. I remember the amazing, warm chocolate chip cookies. And, they got me home slightly earlier than the Northwest flight was set to arrive.

I always meant to fly them, again, but it didn't happen.
