(8,652 posts)...he sent me a text when Wisconsin was called for Trump that read "the fat lady sings". We have had a lot of political arguments over the past 2 years.
No more. He says all the politicians are the same. He seldom, if ever, voted before Trump. He hates "politicians", which attracted him to Trump. He is susceptible to conspiracy theories. He's 70 years old and financially well off. Now, he knows that "Trump is no different from the rest of them."
He said "that's it. I'm done with politics" at the end of the conversation. Hence, my reply, "I'm sure that some Nazi said the same thing to an allied interviewer in Berlin in 1946".
He got the point. Laughed and we spoke no more about it.

(8,652 posts)You could be a Nazi and a Hitler supporter and just do your regular job, turn a blind eye and have been fooled in the election of 1932. Especially if you were 68 years old when he got elected.

(24,155 posts)joined.
many early Nazi's joined the party at the height of Germany's depression desperate for a change from the poverty brought by the ramification of WWI penalties.
So if you joined in 32 it may have been for different reasons than if you joined in 37 or later when everyone knew what the Nazi's stood for in regard to the Jewish population etc.

(8,909 posts)I worry that hyperbole is too acceptable as fact.
Fox News and the rw message machine use this tactic, even when it's not political.

Dictator's take over governments when gullible fools, usually led by their racism, allow it to happen until it's too late.
Hitler, Mussolini and Franco are prime examples. Hitler is just the most recognizable figure when making an analogy and he actually won an election (I know, a plurality, but 46%).
I know that many of you think that the Hitler analogy is over the top. After all Trump didn't kill 6 million Jews. But Jews are not the minority he's after. And Hitler didn't start his mass killings in his first two years. He started his concertation camps, his deportations and the changing of laws to discriminate against the "others" in Germany. Sound familiar?

(90,189 posts)...were exploited to the hilt by skilled propagandists. They supposedly were a republic, with the papers to prove it. Hitler was appointed by Hindenberg, but he already had a power base of unhappy Germans that included ordinary people as well as thugs.
The industrialized killing machine did not happen overnight -- but it did start by clearly delineating "the Other" versus the "true German." The Other was primarily but not limited to Jews. The mentally retarded, homosexuals, the insane, Gypsies, cripples, all were also singled out as undesirable.
Trump, back when he was young and still had a brain, studied Hitler. Tell the Big Lie. Create so much chaos that people can't cope and they lose track. Tell people what you want them to believe; hold orgasmic rallies. Tell them a free press is the enemy of the people.
Trump has clearly delineated the Other already. We find him repugnant, but he thinks we are not "true Americans" anyway. He knows who his base is, and it isn't the likes of us. His base agrees.
We are well on the road to the kind of destabilization that can lead to an authoritarian regime. The federal government has been hollowed out. For continuing education, I recommend a steady diet of Rachel Maddow's news hour.

(61,415 posts)A vote for Trump enabled the atrocities being committed in our name at the border. The people who voted for Trump might as well have closed the cage doors on children themselves. Their vote is their proxy.
We are responsible for the actions of the politicians that we vote to elect.

I read your profile. Count me as skeptical and I hope you won't be offended that I discount your opinion until you've established yourself.
What's a "generic Democrat, I guess?" mean?
I guess maybe you've been a Democrat since you got here two weeks ago.

(14,849 posts)He just shut up about it, and I didn't ask. From time to time he still feels the need to make some gratuitous dig at the Dems or liberals or the media or whatever, but Trump is just so embarrassing he usually keeps his mouth shut.

(18,883 posts)but they're probably not intelligent enough. They dislike knowledge, facts, sympathy, empathy, and the truth. Nah........not a freaking chance they'd become Democrats. They'd rather be Russians, right? They believe all the filthy, stupid lies they've been told, especially about Hillary, and they'd never vote for a Democrat if their lives depended on it. In the coming years their lives probably will depend on it, but screw 'em.

(15,499 posts)Can't bring himself to admit that maybe he should educate himself more on our policies and our history of doing more good for all people instead of just the upper crust? I guess that at the very least he's decided he wasn't smart enough to choose wisely, so he'll not vote again. There's something to be said for at least that much recognition on his part.
