Should This Make Democrats Scared?

The Hill: Progressive strategist says 'significant segment' of Latinos willing to give Trump, GOP a chance

Progressive strategist Ruy Teixeira on Friday said that despite many Latinos leaning toward the Democratic Party, there is a "significant segment" of the community willing to give Republican candidates and policies a chance.

"Latinos lean heavily toward the Democratic Party, but there's a substantial group of them who maybe are a little bit more conservative on social issues," Teixeira, a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, told Hill.TV's Jamal Simmons on "What America's Thinking."

"There's a significant segment, call it a quarter, call it a fifth, who despite [President] Trump's rhetoric, despite the kinds of things he says, they're willing to give the Republicans a hearing, and they like at least some of what Republicans stand for," he continued.

A recent Latino Decisions survey found that at least 1 in 4 Latino voters across the country backed a House Republican candidate in November's midterms.

I know that 1 in 4 is only 25%, but should Democrats be concerned that 25% of Latinos may support the Republican Party.

Cubans particularly, but I've known a few Venezuelans and Puerto Ricans who had no time for liberal ideas.

That leaves 75% of voters who are rational and sane. Respect for mental health issues aside, there's no reasoning with crazy people.

And I wouldn't use The Hill as a data source regardless of whom they've tapped for an opinion. As for the Hispanic electorate? Many are conservative by the nature of their culture, religious beliefs and family value stances. Even if these %s are accurate, it means that 75% of Hispanics are bucking natural political fits to vote for more liberal/progressive candidates. I don't think the reason is a great mystery.

They sure don't seem worried.

Do they?
