President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's spokesman says Trump accepted an invitation to visit Turkey sometime in the next year. The White House hasn't announced anything and no date has been set.
Trump has gotten closer to the Turkish leader as he prepares to withdraw U.S troops from Syria.
Erdogan says he will finish off ISIS in Syria but will also crush the Kurdish YPG militia forces that are allied with the United States.
Kalin says Erdogan extended the invitation during a weekend phone call between the two presidents on the withdrawal of American troops from Syria. Kalin said ... that Turkey will work closely with Russia in Syria, where Vladimir Putin backs Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.
Trump tweeted on Sunday that he had a 'long and productive' call with his counterpart from Turkey in which they discussed 'the slow & highly coordinated' pullout of U.S. military personnel. The U.S. president stunned his Cabinet, lawmakers and much of the world by rejecting the advice of his top aides and agreeing to a withdrawal in a phone call with Erdogan on Dec. 14.

(146,286 posts)I don't see Turkish here on DU very often. I learned the basics of that language while stationed in Samsun, way back in 67-68.

However, in college, I was sort "adopted" by the community of Turkish students there (no idea why), and they taught me a number of phrases. It wasn't as difficult as I though it might be, and actually quite easy to pronounce. Actually, TOO easy to pronounce. Whenever I try out my few words of Turkish on a native speaker, they assume from my accent that I must have lived there for twenty years and am fluent. In reality, my knowledge doesn't go much farther than "sigara içme lütfen!"
