Alcohol, coffee could be key to living longer, study finds

People who drink moderate amounts of alcohol or coffee and are overweight in their 70s live longer lives, according to researchers at UC Irvine Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders.

The researchers started a study in 2003 to look at what makes people live past 90.

They say participants in their study who drank moderate amounts of alcohol or coffee lived longer than those who abstained from either drink.

In addition, people who were overweight in their 70s lived longer than people who were normal or underweight in their 70s.

So we have to do/be all three things? I stopped drinking years ago, I do drink coffee, and I'm slightly overweight at 74. I'll just wait and see what happens down the road. I guess I won't start drinking again.

Most people will experience some kind of extended illness as they get older, and that illness will affect appetite. If you're already thin you can't afford to lose the weight.

There are lots of things that can influence blood pressure in general, but what matters is what affects yours. Get a blood pressure meter and keep a food diary. See what, if any, substances cause an unhealthy elevation in BP.

analyze or refute that one, but for years and years studies have consistently shown that a moderate amount of alcohol, especially red wine, is at worst neutral, but more likely good for you.

Someone who has never consumed alcohol need not bother to take it up, but for the rest of us . . . .

Not sure if the donut is a factor... I’m sure some volunteers will be glad to help verify that one!

I feel like and do better then when I was 30. I am also 20 pounds heavier then when I was 14. Today, I jog, I visit the gym, I avoid "fast food." I had read 4 years ago that 2 drinks or 2 beers per day was GOOD. There are some of us who do not have the age old body affects. Maybe when I am 80 I will be slowing down? I remember in the movie "BILL & TED'S ADVENTURE" the people in the future said "chocolate" was GOOD. Today it has been proved that chocolate has GOOD chemicals and minerals for the body, it is the sugar which is BAD.......
