Analysis: The end of the Mueller investigation is near! No, really. Anytime now.
Sooner or later, Robert S. Mueller III will end his investigation of Russian interference in the 2016 election and the potential involvement of President Trump’s campaign. This will be good news for some lucky reporters because it will mean that a few of them will finally be right.
Stories reporting that the special counsel was nearing the end of his investigation have been around for more than a year, which is more than half as long as Mueller has been conducting his investigation. Since then, Mueller has reportedly been “wrapping up” or “winding down” his “probe” dozens of times.
The Hill newspaper reported last week that the end could be near. The Washington Post did the same a week earlier. Last month, it was NPR’s turn. CNN had the story, too, confidently reporting that Mueller’s team “has begun writing its final report,” according to “multiple sources.”
Politico said the end was nigh in October, as did Bloomberg News, as did Fox News. The New York Post said something similar in June. So did Wired the month before, as did ... oh, just Google it yourself.
So far, no report and no end. Just more probe.
