My point being, where do you draw the line. My suggestion was and is, not having to pay any taxes if not allowed to vote for any reason. No taxation without representation. That was a reason for the American Reveolution. Also, many repubs would be more than happy to trade their vote for not paying any taxes.

I think all students must take a civics class before graduating from high school and that voter registration should be automatic when one turns 18.

You don't know what you are saying...back in the 50s when the whites in the Southern States would give blacks tests they did not give whites in order to vote...insane hard tests...

Please don't go there, we got murdered and beaten up helping black folks register to vote...

. . .STFU snark to a troglodyte who thinks he's smarter than he is.

One could go down a checklist of things until one gets to the STFU point with these types.

We know a guy who does a LOT of complaining about taxes, middle easterners & hispanics (oddly enough, not black folks though), and fancies himself a pretty smart cookie (until he came over to play Jeopardy; he doesn't want to do that anymore)

Well, he talks about things like this too, and i said "Why don't we go back to the original constitution, like you guys talk about, and then only property owners can vote." He lives in a tiny apartment above a bar.

Obviously the idea of a specific voting test HE couldn't meet changed his attitude in a hurry.

That's what i mean by hitting the STFU point.

I get your point that if a person isn't allowed to vote then he also shouldn't have to pay taxes. But the problem is that a lot of people choose not to vote out of laziness or indifference. If those lazy people got rewarded by not having to pay taxes, then we'd have a nation of people who deliberately refrain from voting. That's not your intention at all, I'm sure.

How about, if you're too lazy to register or too lazy to show up (mail in, etc.) then you still pay taxes.
But if you can show that your right to vote was denied (ie roll purging) or significantly impeded (ie one working machine for a large neighborhood) then the no-tax deal kicks in.

some kind of "knowledge of how government works" test for people seeking political office. Or even the test immigrants take to become citizens. I have a feeling it would winnow out...some.
