Twitter users constantly send toxic tweets to women, Amnesty International reports

It's no secret that anonymity on the Internet can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it can help protect your privacy from an increasingly vast network of organizations that sell personal data for profit. On the other hand, it can be used to attack people and concepts without having to be held accountable.

Sometimes it's a coordinated or automated effort, but for female politicians and journalists in the UK, the source of the attacks may not matter as much as their sheer frequency, according to a recent report from Amnesty International, a non-profit human rights organization. The group says that the women in these demographics receive an abusive or problematic tweet an average of every 30 seconds.

CNET reported in March on an earlier study by Amnesty International which said, "As a company, Twitter is failing to respect women's rights online."

Now the non-profit adds, "We are experiencing a watershed moment with women around the world using their collective power to speak out about the abuse they face and amplify their voices through social media platforms.

"However, Twitter's failure to effectively tackle violence and abuse on the platform has a chilling effect on freedom of expression online and undermines women's mobilisation for equality and justice -- particularly groups of women who already face discrimination and marginalisation."

In Amnesty International's previous report, it urged Twitter to be more transparent about these abusive behavioral patterns, and the social service responded on December 12 with an updated transparency analysis that included a new section about its rules enforcement.

However, Amnesty International argues that this data does not go far enough because it doesn't have subcategories for different types of toxicity, and that Twitter's report lacks information on how toxicity was dealt with administratively.

YouTube, and everywhere there's a 'Comments' section. I have seen horrible stuff on FB I reported but their low-wage worker "in the Philippines" refused to do anything ("not against the rules" blah blah blah)

And how about the most profitable 'business' on the Internet (porn)?
