But Trumps feckless, Antoinette imbeciles are either too dense or just too out-of-touch to care. To use John Kellys words, they are just playing government, so they figure the rules dont apply.

Its true that Jared and Ivanka are unpaid for their roles---unless you count the $82 million they made in outside income since taking their positions. (Funny how that happened.) But they are still bound by the same ethics rules as everyone else. If you are going to profit so handsomely for being complicit and doing absolutely nothing, the very least you could do is follow the same damn rules that actual dedicated civil servants are following.

Not to make light of the furlough. Still, there must have been at least several thousand employees who were already off on scheduled vacations at the time the furlough took effect.

(25,812 posts)week paid in advance in Tahiti or whatever, they couldn't really make you come back home, could they? Especially if you're a relatively low level employee, say a clerk at the IRS.
I did hear a piece on NPR a day or two before the shut down, and one of the people briefly profiled was a man who works (as a guard I think, although the specific job probably isn't important) in the federal prison system. He'd already planned a hunting vacation with his family. Not sure just how much was paid for in advance and couldn't be refunded, which again, while important isn't the only point. It's the disruption of plans.
Meanwhile, Trump is making a big deal about how he's staying in the White House, sacrificing his planned vacation in Florida, as if he's actually being deprived of something.

(42,539 posts)There are a number of categories of federal employees who are not subject to being furloughed and who also are not subject to leave policies, including political appointees.
Whether such employees should voluntarily forego vacations during a shutdown is a different question. Moreover, a number of government agencies were previously funded and thus remain operational. Employees of those agencies can take vacations and I think that's entirely appropriate.
