This is how you drown a government in a bathtub

This fully-planned shutdown is being celebrated by privateers and government haters.

Privatization of our public institutions is on the near horizon as our incompetent, radical figureheads destroy agency after agency then scream about how incompetent the agencies were.

Our constitution, unfortunately, does not provide remedies for the deep crisis in which we find ourselves.

There are no ethics, laws or safeguards against this propaganda-made 21st-century fascism.

Grover Norquist must be under his Locke rock salivating.

Rant over.

It's been going on for a long time. Conservatives do things like under fund the Dept of Agriculture, then rant about how they have such a huge building that costs so much but is only half staffed. They saddle the Post Office with pre funding pensions and complain they are losing money. Their cure of course is to get rid of regulatory agencies and privatize everything.

Most of the kids I knew in class had been attending the school for years. But they had 4 new kids in class. One was homeschooled and could barely read or write he was homeschooled. The kid had not even received phonic instruction when I asked him to sound out vowels and syllables. He didn’t even know consonant blends. The two who went to private school were also below grade level and had trouble getting along with other kids. The last child I was not able to access their ability .

It’s on us, too. We’ve watched this build and not demanded action to stop it. That has to end. I’m sick of looking at this mess, seeing it clearly and doing nothing but moaning. Moaning gets us where we are. What do we do? Organization and action won back the House we’d been mourning as lost forever for several election cycles. Use the Constitutional structures in place and let’s find a path out.

Dec 2018

I think good things started in the days post-election 2016, things like Swing Left and the Indivisible movement. I plan to continue supporting such organizations and Democrats whose ideas I like as well as the Party. I plan to donate to and work for candidates whose policies are close to mine.

I think we should communicate to our representatives and candidates that the legislative branch of government should be more muscular, taking back power ceded over time to the executive. I think reinstating the Fairness Doctrine with appropriate updates would be good. The voter protections Democrats in Congress are looking to pass are needed. Campaign finance reform is needed. I have a laundry list of things I’d like. Why can’t we have a reality-based Fox News? Why can’t we start a liberal Federalist Society? I’m old enough to know I won’t get my wish list supporting any one candidate or in a single election cycle. But we need to start building, discussing these ideas. Working at it is all I can think to do.

Sat Dec 29, 2018, 01:14 PM
Dec 2018

First:

Military and Defense

Don't need it. Too big. Drown it in a bathtub.

Second:

Remove the cap on Social Security.

Social Security should be paid on EVERY dollar earned, not only to $128k

Third:

End corporate welfare. All of it. Don't want to pay corporate taxes? You can't do business here.

Fourth:

Abolish ICE and most of the Patriot Act

The world is dangerous. Deal with it.

Other progressive ideas:

Fifth:

Election day should be a national holiday.

Sixth:

Gerrymandering needs to be reversed and drowned in a bathtub

Seventh:

Overturn Citizen's United

Eighth:

Implement single-payer

I could go on, but you get the point...
