The Army has just handed a $3 million grant to researchers at the University of Indianas School of Medicine for the creation of an anti-suicide nasal spray. The project, to be led by Dr. Michael Kubek, an associate professor of neurobiology, is arguably one of the more unusual military efforts to thwart a record number of suicides among active-duty personnel and veterans.
(snip)
According to Kubek and his colleagues, a snort of their suicide-stopping neurochemical a naturally occurring compound called thyrotropin-releasing hormone, or TRH could be the solution.

By harnessing new advancements in nanotechnology, however, Kubeks research team has now devised nanoparticle drug-delivery systems, designed to dissolve over time inside the brain, that can safely usher TRH across the blood-brain barrier when inserted into the human nasal cavity.
The nanoparticle breakthrough was enough to convince military brass that Kubeks nasal spray just might have a shot at preventing suicides. The projects three-year Army grant will be used to ascertain whether TRH and the drug-delivery systems are safe, and then conduct a clinical trial to show, in human patients, that this really can save lives, Kubek said.

Treating the symptom not the cause... what could possibly go wrong with that I wonder? Freaky.

Seriously, suicide in the military has become epidemic. The best solution is to bring them all home now.

(39,215 posts)himself then it is just like any other pill that they can refuse to take. Also in order for it to work you need to recognize the patient who is thinking about suicide.

(1,315 posts)Quit sending young men and women to experience the horrors of war, the guilt of survival and what they are compelled to do to other people in our name.
We send many of our best and brightest to lose their innocence, youth and energetic optimism in foreign lands to fight for Big Business and it's bought and payed for traitors in Washington. This is just treating the symptom but not even addressing the root cause.
As a vet I have a duty to my brothers and sisters to stand up and cry not one more life.
