The first answer has everything to do with the press. Reporters arent equipped to deal with constant dishonesty, and one-off fact checks arent enough to stop a lie from gaining currency. The Romney campaign is capitalizing on both facts to push a false narrative and embed it in the political conversation. So far, judging from the non-response of most reporters, its working.
The second answer is much more cynical. As Greg noted when the first ad debuted, this is a clear attempt to resurrect the politics of resentment. Its no accident that Romney uses this line when speaking to groups of working-class white voters; its meant to conjure images of young bucks and welfare queens who abuse the system and take from more productive Americans. Indeed, when you consider the extent to which this attack came out of the blue no one was talking about welfare before Romney began this assault and the fact that Romneys White House bid depends on record levels of support from white voters, its hard not to see it as a blatant attempt to pander to the racial anxieties of downscale whites.
Which is why its worth pointing out this lie whenever it surfaces. Far more so than Joe Biden who made an off-the-cuff remark Romney is playing a deliberate game of racial division, trying to harm Obamas standing with whites by connecting him to long-circulating stereotypes about African Americans. Its an ugly move that should be condemned in the harshest terms possible.

(15,220 posts)I'm from a small town in Texas and many of my Facebook friends are former school mates - ALL massively Republican. (Sure glad I turned out better!!! LOL)
But that is the argument that they use against everything! If you tell them the sky is blue, they will come back complaining about "those people on welfare"! That is so entrenched into their tiny little brains that they cannot see past it! It riles them up, and then when they see that all of their friends and neighbors are riled up, too, they feel secure and safe in being in the "moral majority that is always right". And they are in church every Sunday, of course, swearing that they don't hate Obama because he's black.

(6,960 posts)"Racial anxieties" is the nice way to put it.
This Rmoney-Repuglican tactic is a flat-out appeal to racism.

(9,154 posts)Um, guess you didn't see the video of Romney circling behind a reporter (AP?) who did question him, with Romney getting in the reporter's personal space 'from behind' and pretty clearly trying to get the reporter to take a swing at him?

Could Romney's violation of reporter's personal space have anything to do with reporters not wanting to question him?
