A few days before Bill gave a long, boring speech to the convention where Dukakis was endorsed as the candidate, 1988.
It was boring NOT because of Bill but they did NOT turn down the house lights and that is the worst thing you can do, people start visiting, get restless, etc.
He was being made fun of by everyone for a 32 minute speech that nobody was paying attention to.
His friend Harry Thomason of Linda Bloodworth and Harry Thomason fame decided the way out of this was "The Tonight Show", to salvage his career as a politician who was at the time the butt of a joke.
Carson and team said no we NEVER have politicians because Johnny doesnt want to take sides, so the idea was he would come on and play the sax.
This saved his career and we all know what happened 4 yrs later.

I remember when this first aired.
From a Rhodes Scholar (Bill) and the President of the Harvard Law Review (Barack) to buffoons like Trump and W.
SAD!

(15,536 posts)3. Wow. What a flashback. I remember when he played the sax on TV.
I had no idea he was so darned quick witted and funny. He is an extremely intelligent man and an avid reader, so his comebacks and jokes are natural for him. He looks so young in that video. Has there ever been a Republican president that had a sense of humor like that? I think one of the requirements to be in the Republican party is to have zero sense of humor and look dour all the time.
Thanks for that nostalgic post.
