Missouri Republican Senate candidate Todd Akin's advisers are making preparations to withdraw from the race Tuesday, GOP operative Richard Grenell and RedState.com editor Erick Erickson report. Grenell cited "GOP sources" in his tweet announcing the withdrawal, which has yet to be confirmed by Akin. Akin has been under fire since saying women have biological defenses to fend off pregnancy after a "legitimate rape.

Although a version of this bill passed the GOP-controlled House, the forcible rape language was eventually removed due to widespread public outcry
So most of the GOP House liked the term "forcible rape" and Ryan co-sponsored the bill

(8,377 posts)Of course that was a terrible choice of words, but it is possible to see that as a misstatement. There are, after all, some cases where a woman alleges rape when no rape actually occurred. I don't see the point of that distinction because the woman should have control of her reproduction, no matter how the fertilization might have occurred. Nonetheless, that is not the part of Akin's comments that are so thoroughly deplorable to me.
It is the other part -- the very idea that there is some secret, imaginary contraception mechanism that a woman can summons, possible subconsciously, to race to the scene and prevent the rape from resulting in pregnancy. The idea that any man could utter words that stupid in 2012 is completely beyond my comprehension, let alone a man running for one of the highest seats in the land. Yet the MSM barely even mentioned that.
Our media is so bad these days, there is hardly any point in having freedom of the press.

(224 posts)I don't see a focus on one part to the detriment of the other.
Plus, isn't it enough that people are focusing on this at all? Imagine if it had slipped through (perhaps intentionally) like so many other egregious things do.
I'm just glad it's getting the attention.

(8,377 posts)One is a total disregard for what the act of rape means to women. that is getting attention, as well it should. But I don't believe he really meant to indicate a total disregard for how rape affects women. I'm prepared to give him that much benefit of the doubt. Maybe I'm too charitable.
The other issue is one of pure, unadulterated scientific stupidity, and that is the part that is mostly going untouched, from what I've seen.
But maybe it is simply that the politicians think it will be easier to bludgeon the guy with the "legitimate rape" terminology. I think that is a mistake because it is pretty easy for him to use the "I misspoke" defense. "Obviously I didn't mean it the way it came out and I am sorry if the way I phrased this hurt anybody's feelings."
The other one cannot possibly be a misstatement. That was completely outrageous, and just shows how far these teabaggers are willing to twist their brains in order to justify no exceptions for rape or incest. "We don't need an exception for rape because a doctor told me that god created the woman's body to automatically reject the sperm if it is a rape."
Basically we should be asking everybody who takes the "no exceptions for rape" position if they also believe that the woman's body is able to automatically unleash contraceptives so that she won't get pregnant from a rape. "I'm only asking because you have the same position as Congressman Akin on the issue and I wanted to know if you also shared his 'understanding' of how reproduction works." Make them keep defending that position.

(32,045 posts)conservative women on my FB feed are saying he's crazy. Interestingly they're quite willing to throw him to the wolves but will not own that many in the GOP are behaving this way towards women & in fact attacking women has become part of their platform.
