The FAA cited staff shortages for the extraordinary move

The Federal Aviation Administration has stopped flights into LaGuardia Airport in New York City due to major staff shortages amid the partial government shutdown.

The startling announcement came after unions representing aviation workers released a statement on Wednesday warning that the shutdown could pose serious safety risks for its members and travelers. “In our risk-averse industry, we cannot even calculate the level of risk currently at play, nor predict the point at which the entire system will break,” the statement read.

Shame on all the Republicans in the House and Senate who voted against re-opening the government.

14. CNN explained what a "ground stop" means - incoming flights from other airports....

....have been stopped from taking off until the people at LaGuardia are sure there will be a place for them when they arrive. The ground stop was lifted for flights on the west coast because they have six hours to get to LaGuardia. Many of the incoming flights in the northeast are still grounded, but will be released sometime soon.
