Northam Mulled Party Switch In Aftermath Of Yearbook Picture

By Kate Riga

Gov. Ralph Northam (D) was surprised by the immediacy with which Democrats were ready to toss him out after the racist picture on his yearbook page circulated, and even considered switching his party registration to govern as an independent.

According to a Tuesday Washington Post report, Northam was initially shocked by the intensity of the backlash. He thought his allies would give him the benefit of the doubt and be more hesitant to throw him over.

Numerous top Democrats, including Speaker Pelosi (D-CA), Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), and Virginia’s two U.S. senators have called for his resignation. Northam’s consideration of shedding his Democratic party affiliation reveals the depth of his political isolation.

...a Republican, this either never would have come to light or they would, at least secretly, be high-fiving him for it.

Your yearbook page shows a photo of someone in blackface standing next to someone in a KKK costume. You had to really think about which person in the pic was you before determining that neither was you, yet it's on your yearbook page. And you're so offended by the backlash that you contemplated changing your party affiliation.

Uh, it's time to go.

If he's not going to resign, I don't want the D by his name.

I don't think we have any means of forcing him out, and it's not ideal anyway considering the next two idiots behind him have their own problems.

I don't hate this idea.
